Yguazu Becomes Paraguay’s First ‘Healthy Municipality’ In Alto Parana

Paraguay’s district of Yguazú has officially become the first municipality in the Alto Paraná department to receive certification as a ‘Healthy Municipality’. Representatives from the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare (Mspbs) presented the accreditation during a ceremony held at the hall of the local Japanese Association.

This recognition, according to officials, is the result of a concerted effort involving local authorities, public and private institutions, and various community groups. The achievement highlights a shared commitment to creating healthier, and participatory environments for all residents.

A strategy for public well-being

The initiative is spearheaded by the Directorate General of Health Promotion. Its primary goal is to help create healthy environments and habits within the municipality and the wider community. Furthermore, the strategy encourages participation, commitment, and decisive action from municipal authorities and organised community actors to drive the development of healthy public policies.

This strategy transforms communities through a continuous process that includes several key stages. These begin with awareness campaigns and organisational efforts, followed by participatory planning and the execution of local initiatives. By fostering inter-sectoral coordination and empowering local governments and citizens, the programme aims to comprehensively address the social determinants of health and improve the quality of life for inhabitants.

Community celebration and collaboration

The certification event was marked by a strong sense of community integration. This was made possible through the cooperation of the Japanese Association of Yguazú, which hosted the ceremony. The event also featured cultural presentations from the municipal ballet and the Jeroky Kyre’ỹ Dance Academy, with support from the Foundation of Religious for Health.

The official ceremony was led by the municipal mayor, Engineer Mauro Kawano. He was joined by other local authorities, departmental leaders, and representatives from the education sector. Also in attendance were members of the National Police and the civil police.

Representing the Ministry of Health was Gustavo Montañez, the Director General of Health Promotion, and Dr Federico Schrodel, Director of the Tenth Health Region. Staff from the Yguazú health centre and professionals from health promotion departments across various districts of Alto Paraná also attended the event.
