People from every corner of the globe are drawn to Asunción, where Paraguay’s laid-back capital has quietly become a melting pot of cultures, ideas, and ambition. Every other Tuesday evening from 18:00 to 21:00, digital nomads, expats, and friendly locals come together at the ever-popular Afterwork English Networking event organised by The Asunción Times. In this People of Asunción series, we introduce the inspiring individuals who make this scene so uniquely alive. In #32, Julia Medina from Paraguay.
Meet Julia Medina
Julia Medina, 19, is from Asunción and combines her professional work with her studies in industrial engineering. Her work in marketing includes creating media kits, managing brands, developing advertising strategies, and planning campaigns. In addition, she works in filmmaking and videomaking, while her academic interests lie in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Julia has played the clarinet and violin since the age of 12. Photography is another passion, as she enjoys taking her camera wherever she goes to capture spontaneous moments from her everyday life. For Julia, these seemingly contrasting interests are all part of who she is today.

What is your favourite place in Paraguay, and why?
“I really like nature. It is something that is difficult to find so close to the city in other countries, so it is a privilege that we have green areas so close here in Paraguay. In just 30 minutes, we can already reach them. As for places within the city, I like any nice restaurant or bar where you can have good conversations.”
What do you look for in a place to spend time in Asunción?
“A place where conversation can flow. Here in Asunción, there is not much to do apart from eating and enjoying time with people. Therefore, a place where conversation can flow is great.”
What do you miss most about Paraguay when you are abroad?
“My people. I do not mean only my family, but the Paraguayan people. That warmth you find here is something you will not find in another country.”
If you were to move away tomorrow, what would you absolutely take with you from Paraguay?
“My mate. I am more of a mate person than a tereré person. Ultimately, it is the warmth of the people and the connections formed through everyday interactions that I value most. I appreciate the simple experiences that bring people together and make a place feel like home.”
