Paraguay Secures More Than US$10 Million Through Carbon Credits

Following the regulation of the carbon credit market, Paraguay has already secured investments exceeding US$10 million in the Chaco region. Additionally, the country is currently expanding certification processes over more than 400,000 hectares.

Santiago Peña, the President of Paraguay, held a working meeting 29 January 2026 with the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Rolando de Barros. The purpose of the meeting was to review progress, challenges, and priorities of the environmental agenda. The meeting had an emphasis on sustainable development and positioning Paraguay as a hub for green business.

A work of coordination

During the meeting, the minister reaffirmed the importance of consolidating the carbon credit market by ensuring the traceability, quality, and transparency of certificates. This is as a key tool for attracting investment and strengthening the green economy.

Minister de Barros also highlighted the coordinated work with binational entities such as Itaipu and Yacyretá to strengthen Paraguay’s environmental capital. Those organisations are adding value to natural resources and positioning the country as a sustainable business hub. The government is now capable of attracting investment in clean energy, including solar and photovoltaic plants and green hydrogen.

What is carbon credits?

Carbon credits are tradable certificates representing the removal or avoidance of one metric tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent from the atmosphere. They function as a market-based tool allowing companies to offset unavoidable emissions by financing environmental projects like reforestation or renewable energy. These credits facilitate climate action, providing capital to initiatives that reduce greenhouse gases.

Protecting wild areas

Another topic addressed during the meeting was the strengthening of protected wild areas. This landmass covers 2.4 million hectares under state administration. In this context, progress was made in infrastructure, logistics, research, and communications. The aim is to consolidate these areas as spaces for conservation, research, and recreation.

The meeting reaffirmed the Government of Paraguay’s commitment to integrating environmental protection with economic development, promoting sustainable investments, responsible growth, and opportunities for future generations.
