Paraguay has solidified its position as a prominent regional watermelon producer, cultivating over 4,000 hectares to supply both domestic and international export markets. In 2023, the nation produced more than 65,000 tonnes of the fruit, generating an estimated US$12 million in revenue from a combination of internal commercialisation and foreign sales. This performance underscores the growing importance of the crop to the country’s agricultural economy.
Industry projections indicate a path of sustained growth, with officials anticipating that production could soon surpass 80,000 tonnes annually. This upward trend consolidates watermelon as a strategic commodity within Paraguay’s national plan for agricultural diversification. Consequently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) is actively supporting this expansion through a series of targeted initiatives aimed at boosting the sector’s capacity and reach.
A strategic role in agricultural diversification
The ministry’s support is multifaceted, focusing on providing essential technical assistance and facilitating the transfer of modern agricultural knowledge to farmers. Furthermore, its programmes aim to strengthen the country’s Family Farming sector, which forms the backbone of watermelon cultivation, and to promote significant improvements in overall productivity. These strategic efforts were a key topic during talks presented by the Directorate of Agrarian Extension, a department within the agricultural ministry, at the MAG stand during the recent Expo Paraguay 2026 in Mariano Roque Alonso.
Watermelon cultivation is geographically distributed across several key administrative departments, showcasing the crop’s adaptability. The primary growing regions include Concepción, San Pedro, Caaguazú, and Cordillera. In addition, the departments of Paraguarí and Itapúa contribute significantly to the national output, creating a widespread production base that supports rural economies across the nation.
Key regional watermelon producer hubs
Within these regions, certain districts have emerged as the primary production hubs for the country. The district of Horqueta in Concepción and Guayaibí in San Pedro are considered the most important centres, concentrating a substantial portion of national cultivation. The success of these areas is largely attributed to their highly favourable soil and climate conditions, which are ideal for watermelon farming. The departments of Caaguazú and Cordillera also share these advantageous agricultural characteristics, making them vital to the industry.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock is implementing a strategy of close collaboration with watermelon producers to drive growth. This approach involves providing direct assistance through comprehensive training programmes. Farmers receive detailed instruction on crucial aspects of cultivation, including effective crop management techniques, correct soil preparation, determining optimal planting density, and implementing modern pest control methods to protect their harvest.
Domestic consumption and nutritional benefits
Paraguayan watermelon also plays a fundamental role in national nutrition. It is estimated that more than 70% of the total production is destined for the internal market, making it a staple fruit for many households. The fruit is regularly integrated into various social and school programmes, ensuring its health benefits reach a wide segment of the population, including children and vulnerable communities.
From a health perspective, watermelon is a fruit rich in water, vitamin C, and antioxidants. This nutritional profile makes it ideal for hydration and general well-being, particularly during the periods of high temperatures common in the region. Health officials note that its regular consumption contributes to the prevention of certain diseases and helps to strengthen the immune system.
