Paraguay GAA wins!

The joy was immense following the first victory. Particularly for Mozz Suraphot, the founder of Paraguay GAA, who established the team just ten months ago. The Thai-born player, sidelined by an injury mere days before the match, passionately supported his team.

“It’s an honour to be part of this historic moment. Just ten months ago, no one thought this would be possible”, Mozz stated. “Seeing it become a reality feels like a dream. The energy is incredible and everything is so well organised, from the equipment to the involvement of the Irish Consulate. I’m genuinely proud of what we have accomplished today.”

“I am able to say: I was there”

Gaelic football – a traditional Irish sport – combines elements of football, rugby, and basketball. Around a hundred people enjoyed supporting both teams on the sunny afternoon at Luque Rugby Club. The venue was decorated with Irish and Paraguayan flags, there was upbeat music playing, and the vibe was warm and festive.

Among the crowd under the sunny sky of Luque, Paraguayan spectator Rosa shared her excitement about witnessing Gaelic football for the first time. “I love sports. Especially football and rugby, so when I heard about this, I had to come. I am able to say: I was there, at the very first match in Paraguay. That’s something special, a bit of history,” she reflected.

As part of the crowd enjoying the Irish and Paraguayan inspired celebration, Rosa tried the food and drinks offered at the venue. On the menu: bondiola and vacío, paired with sauces like criolla and chimichurri. And there was Guinness beer, the pride of Ireland. “I had the vacío sandwich: delicious! And of course, the Guinness, highly recommended,” she laughed.

Overwhelmed with joy after Paraguay GAA win

On the pitch Paraguay GAA was strong against Cuenca de la Plata from the very first second. Leading 8-3 at half time, victory was in sight. With the eventual 19-11 win, Paraguay GAA placed its name on the cup.

Paraguay GAA player Geovanny was overwhelmed with joy. “It’s emotional. I feel proud to fight for a team that’s representing Paraguay,” said the 33-year-old Ecuadorian. “We gave it our all against a team with more than twelve years of experience. Cuenca de la Plata even was a world club champion at some point. I believed we could win, but it was always going to be very difficult.”

“The team was focused and determined. We all knew our mission was to win,” Geovanny said with a smile, still holding his medal. “When one of us was tired, we asked to be subbed out, and the next player came in with the same mindset. That’s what made us play as one, and win as one.”

Despite the 19-11 final score, the match was not without its nerves. The team did not feel secure in their lead, until the final minutes. “We stayed mentally focused, played like we were still behind. When the final whistle blew, it was a surreal moment. Our very first match on home soil, and we have won!”

“Paraguay has given me everything”

Though Ecuadorian by birth, Geovanny expressed his deep pride in representing Paraguay. “My wife is Paraguayan, my son is Paraguayan, and this country has given me everything: friends, family, support. This win is for Paraguay, from someone who started as just a humble cook from Ecuador.”

Looking ahead, the Paraguay GAA player was hopeful: “We want more people to join and to build a proper league. And become one of the strongest teams in South America.”

Also Paraguay GAA founder Mozz ended with a message to the crowd: “Our team is always open to new players, whether you’re an experienxed footballer or rugby player, or a complete beginner. We have an open-door policy, so come and join us!”
