Paraguayan tennis star Daniel Vallejo delivered a career-defining performance at the 2026 Nordea Open in Bastad, Sweden, reaching the semi-finals of the ATP 250 clay-court event. The 22-year-old’s impressive run ended with a narrow defeat to defending champion Luciano Darderi, but it marked a historic tennis milestone as Paraguay’s first ATP semi-final in 24 years.
Vallejo’s semi-final appearance represents Paraguay’s first at ATP Tour level in 24 years, since Ramón Delgado last achieved the feat in 2002. Delgado, a former world No. 52 (1999), was the last Paraguayan to make a significant impact on the main tour before Vallejo’s emergence. This run underscores Vallejo’s rapid ascent and breathes new life into a nation with limited tennis heritage beyond icons like Víctor Pecci.
A strong start and thrilling semi-final
The journey began strongly in the Swedish sunshine. Vallejo dispatched Spanish qualifier Miguel Damas 6-3, 6-3 in the second round, then overcame sixth seed Botic van de Zandschulp from the Netherlands in a three-set thriller (4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4)). His quarter-final victory over Italian Stefano Travaglia (7-6(5), 6-2) showcased growing confidence and consistency on clay.
In the semi-finals, Vallejo pushed second seed Darderi to the limit in a high-quality encounter. The Italian prevailed 6-4, 6-7(11), 6-3 after nearly three hours, but Vallejo’s fighting spirit shone through, especially in a marathon second-set tie-break that he took 13-11. Though he converted just one of eight break points, the performance highlighted his potential against top opposition.
Looking ahead with momentum
Vallejo’s Bastad campaign not only earns valuable ranking points but also boosts Paraguayan tennis on the global stage. For a young player still building experience, reaching the last four at an ATP event on European soil is a significant achievement. Vallejo’s composure under pressure and ability to compete with established names shows a bright future. Paraguay will be watching closely as Dani Vallejo continues his climb.
