Doña Jo: Great Little Buffet in Ciudad del Este

Each week, Tommy-Maurice is going to a different restaurant in Asunción. This week, it will be in Ciudad del Este. We will look at a lovely little buffet located in Area 3, the Doña Jo.

Before this trip, I had never been to the Departamento de Alto Paraná. Ciudad del Este was new for me. With approximately 80 nationalities represented in the city, it allows citizens to display and help others discover local cuisine from around the world. Wanting to try with my friends from the Asunción Hash House Harriers another sector of the town, we have been to Area 3, where is located the good Doña Jo restaurant. An establishment worth the try in this part of the city!

Doña Jo offers typical Paraguayan food in the form of a self-service buffet. You can get food such as vorí vorí, chipa guazú, sopa paraguaya, and other items such as regular soup, pasta, meats, salads, and vegetables. Faithful to my habits, I took everything that was not fish and I really liked it! I first started with the vorí vorí, as I like to start with soup or stew before getting the main dish if possible. This one did not contain chicken but contain the rest; the broth, the vegetables, and the corn balls. Still, it was very tasteful and enjoyed it! I then continued with a plate containing meat, such as sausage and beef, pasta with cheese, and vegetables. Everything was good and if I had more space, I would have taken another plate! Apart from the food, this lovely little buffet is super clean and well-maintained, and the employees are very polite and friendly. Yes, you probably have tried a lot of local restaurants in Paraguay. Still, I highly recommend you go to this one and try it for yourself!

As for the price, it is in the average for buffet not being by the kilo, costing slightly over 8 American dollars or Euros. You can pay by cash and by cards, and if you do not want to go to the restaurant, the establishment can come to you! Doña Jo offer delivery service via PedidosYa, where you can get specific plate rather than the buffet. For example, at the time of writing, the recommended plate on the app where beef stew with rice, priced at 25K Guaraníes, or slightly over 3 American dollars or Euros. The other suggestion is a “puretón,” a tortilla with meat, an egg, and vegetables. It is priced at 21 Guaraníes, just slightly over 2.50 American dollars or Euros. These PedidosYa prices exclude the delivery cost.

Doña Jo is located on Avenida Campo Vía in Area 3 of Ciudad del Este. It is in a quieter area in a family-friendly oriented environment. If you arrive from Brazil and Argentina, you can continue on Ruta PY 02 until General Bernardino Caballero where you need to turn left, going south. Continue on that street until you reach Eugenio A. Garay, then turn right, going west. You will cross Campo Vía, where you need to turn left, going south. If you come from Asunción, continue on Ruta PY 02 until you reach Ruta PY 07, where you need to go south. Drive on this street until you reach Avenida Guayaibyty. Turn right away on Eugenio A. Garay going south-east until you reach Campo Vía, where you will need to turn left, going north. If you arrive from Encarnación, continue on Ruta PY 07 until reaching Garay. The restaurant is around 3 kilometres from downtown Ciudad del Este, it is then walkable, but not for everyone. You can easily take a Bolt or Uber to go to the establishment or take transportation along Caballero. The restaurant is open from 10 in the morning to 6 at night each day except Sunday, where it is only open for lunch. It is highly recommended to send them a message on Instagram or called them before coming if you want to go with a big group.
