Don José Giménez, who has been driving buses along Asunción’s Line 48 for 27 years, celebrated his last day of work on Tuesday with regular passengers before settling into a life of retirement.
With green and white balloons matching the livery of his bus for the day, #1536, and his customary friendly smile, Mr Giménez welcomed passengers aboard for the final time on the route which travels between Lambaré and Limpio, via downtown Asunción – a 90 km roundtrip.
On the windshield of his bus, a sign read: “Today I am retiring after 27 years.” This news did not go unnoticed by the passengers, who shared their experiences and memories with Don José on social networks.
Several travelers expressed their joy at having been part of this “last round” with the driver. Rocío Amarilla commented: “Yesterday I traveled with him and I saw that little sign, I became emotional, because it was a long struggle to get to this, I imagine.”
Other passengers highlighted the human quality of Don José. Cinthya Gómez recalled: “Don Giménez was an excellent person. Many times my father and mother did not have enough money for his fare. In 2002 or so, Don Giménez still took them to the market and on the way back I remember that my mother paid him double fare.”
These testimonies reflect the positive impact that Don José had on the lives of his passengers throughout his 27 years of service. His dedication, kindness and generosity will remain engraved in the memories of those who had the opportunity to travel with him.
Don José Giménez’s retirement marks the end of an era for Line 48, but his legacy will remain in the hearts of those to whom he provided exceptional service for so many years. His story is a reminder of how a kind gesture and friendly treatment can make a difference in people’s lives.
Thank you for so many years of service, Don José – and enjoy your retirement!
