Speed Skater Julio Mirena Wins Paraguay’s Only Medal At World Skate Games ASU26

Paraguayan speed skater Julio Mirena has won a bronze medal in the 15,000-metre elimination race at the World Skate Games ASU26. Competing on at the Costanera circuit in Asunción, Mirena secured a place on the podium, being the only Paraguayan to do so; Paraguay fielded athletes across several disciplines, but Mirena’s result is the sole medal noted.

In over two weeks, Paraguay welcomed more than 8,000 athletes from over 90 countries for the World Skate Games ASU26. The competition brought together elite athletes in 40 wheeled disciplines and took place at various locations in Asunción and its metropolitan area. The venues included the Paraguayan Olympic Committee (COP), the National Sports Secretariat (SND), the Asunción riverfront, and Cerro Lambaré.

Mirena’s speed skating event drew a significant crowd, with spectators lining the capital’s riverfront to support the athletes. The demanding speed skating competition was a highlight of the games, culminating in a podium finish for the national representative. The victory was claimed by Colombian skater Kevin Lenis, who took the gold medal, while his compatriot Juan Mantilla secured silver.

A significant achievement for Team Paraguay

Following the race, Julio Mirena emphasised the importance of the result for the Paraguayan team after a season of intense sporting activity. He expressed his gratitude for the support from the public and followers of the discipline within the country.

“Thanks to the Paraguayans and to all those who follow us, you are fundamental,” the athlete stated.

Mirena’s medal is a key achievement for the national delegation at the World Skate Games ASU26. The international event brings together athletes from across the globe to Paraguay for a celebration of skating and sports on wheels.

Demanding competition in Asunción

The Paraguayan skater also commented on the challenges of the competition and the work involved in organising the road speed skating events at the Costanera de Asunción. He explained that the circuit was approved by World Skate, the sport’s international governing body, and that the organising committee worked diligently to meet the requirements of a global competition.

“As an athlete, I am prepared for all kinds of circumstances. We have had many challenges, in practically every world championship,” he remarked.

Mirena described speed skating as an extreme discipline, defined by the adrenaline and energy it demands from its competitors. Highlighting his connection to the nation, he affirmed, “I am Paraguayan and an athlete.”

One of Paraguay’s leading figures

Julio Mirena arrived at ASU26 as one of Paraguay’s leading figures in speed skating. At the 2024 World Skate Games in Italy, he won the bronze medal, becoming the first Paraguayan to reach the world podium in this discipline.

In 2025 he added another bronze at the World Skate Marathon Tour in Shanghai and later won the gold medal in the 5,000 meters points race at the World Games in Chengdu.
