Paraguay Expanding Trade In Asia, Sends First Pork Shipment To The Philippines

Paraguay has completed its first-ever pork shipment to the Philippines, marking a milestone for the country’s livestock sector and opening a new export destination in Asia. The inaugural shipment departed early July 2026, carrying 27,002 kilograms of bone-in baby back ribs. The operation is expected to strengthen Paraguay’s position as a supplier of high-quality animal products in international markets.

The shipment was carried out under the sanitary certification overseen by the National Service for Animal Quality and Health (SENACSA), following years of technical negotiations between Paraguay and the Philippines. The first shipment was carried out by Paraguayan pork processor UPISA. According to SENACSA, the initial plan is to export one container per month. Export volumes are expected to increase as commercial ties with the Philippines develop.

A growing market in Asia

The Philippines represents a promising destination for Paraguayan pork exports. With a population of more than 115 million people, it is one of Asia’s largest consumers of pork. In recent years, the country has increased imports after outbreaks of African Swine Fever reduced domestic pig production, creating new opportunities for international suppliers.

For Paraguay, entering the Philippine market is part of a broader strategy to diversify export destinations beyond its traditional regional partners. The Asian market offers significant growth potential, particularly for countries capable of meeting strict sanitary and quality requirements. The shipment also reflects closer economic ties between Paraguay and the Philippines, which have strengthened commercial cooperation in recent years.

Pork exports continue to grow

According to SENACSA, Paraguay exported 8.72 million kilograms of pork products and by-products during the first half of 2026. The country generated more than US$25.5 million in free-on-board (FOB) value. Compared with the same period last year, exports increased by approximately 11% in volume and 15% in value, highlighting the sector’s continued expansion. Industry representatives attribute this growth to investments in genetics, biosecurity, production technology, and sanitary controls. These improvements have enhanced the competitiveness of Paraguayan pork in international markets.

The opening of the Philippine market becomes Paraguay’s sixteenth authorised destination for pork exports. It also represents another step in the country’s efforts to expand its agricultural trade. As demand grows, authorities and producers expect the new commercial relationship to create further opportunities for the national pork industry while reinforcing Paraguay’s reputation as a reliable exporter of safe and high-quality food products.
