For twenty-five years, Sebastián Boesmi has explored what painting can become through changing materials and ideas. Now, the Travesías exhibition brings that journey together at the BGN/Arte gallery in Asunción. The exhibition opened on Thursday, 3 September, presenting works created between 2001 and 2026. Visitors can explore different stages of Boesmi’s artistic practice all through October.
A journey through painting
Walking through Travesías, visitors can encounter paintings from different periods of Boesmi’s career. The exhibition places contrasting materials, scales and visual languages alongside one another. As a result, older and newer works enter into unexpected conversations across the gallery. The selection invites visitors to reconsider how painting changes when viewed from the present.
Sebastián Boesmi approaches painting as an open field. Therefore, the exhibition also includes collaborative works and pieces created through alternative processes. These experiments challenge traditional ideas surrounding materials, production and artistic authorship. Together, the works ask where painting can move when artists continue to question its established boundaries.
Looking at painting differently
Rather than presenting a straightforward timeline, Travesías encourages visitors to look again. The works showcase memory, material, experimentation, collaboration and observation throughout the exhibition. Consequently, pieces from different moments gain new meanings when placed alongside one another. The gallery becomes a space where ideas can continue developing.
Art historian Carlos Sosa writes the exhibition text, bringing a personal connection to Sebastián Boesmi’s career. Sosa previously taught the artist and also contributed text to his first exhibition. Boesmi’s career extends between Paraguay and Spain, while his projects have also reached Europe and the United States. His latest exhibition continues international artistic discourse through painting.
An open question
At the centre of Travesías sits a question about the possibilities of painting today. Sebastián Boesmi returns to the medium while leaving room for uncertainty, experimentation and discovery. The exhibition opens another chapter with conversations about contemporary images. Visitors can consider the question alongside works spanning twenty-five years of practice.
The BGN/Arte gallery sits at Augusto Roa Bastos and Avenida España, inside Paseo La Peregrina. Visitors can enter freely from Monday to Friday between 10:00 and 18:00. Weekend visits require prior booking, while Travesías remains open until mid-October.
