New Paved Roads To Ports In Itapúa Complete

Newly paved access roads to ports along export corridors in Itapúa, south-eastern Paraguay, have been completed, enhancing connectivity near the Argentine border. The project, celebrated in a ceremony led by Paraguayan President Santiago Peña, is set to benefit over 37,000 people in the region.

Situated on the banks of the Paraná River, Itapúa is one of Paraguay’s most dynamic regions, renowned for its fertile soil and robust agricultural output, including soya, maize, wheat, and livestock. The area also hosts thriving agro-industrial and export sectors, making efficient logistics infrastructure vital to its economy. These improved roads are expected to streamline transport, boost trade, and support the region’s continued growth.

“This work reflects our vision of a more connected and productive Paraguay,” said President Peña. “Improving infrastructure in the countryside is key to economic growth and social inclusion.”

New paved roads

The intervention covered a total length of 17.15 km, divided into two segments. The first, measuring 12.16 km, connects the road between the town of Carlos Antonio López and the Two Frontiers Port (Puerto Dos Fronteras). The second stretch, spanning 4.98 km, links Carlos Antonio López´s road to the town of Mayor Otaño, located around 180 kilometres away from Itapúa’s capital, Encarnación, which plays a strategic role in regional trade and connectivity.

Further projects

After the inauguration ceremony, the president, alongside other authorities, visited another project focused on improving and maintaining road corridors. Additional infrastructure developments are underway, including the asphalt paving of 57.22 km of Paraguayan Route 18, a road crossing the southern Oriental Region from east to west.

“It is exciting to see it become reality,” stated President Peña in Itapuá. “But we are still not satisfied, we want to do so much more. We will continue investing in road infrastructure, because we know that is what brings progress to this part of the country.”

This week also Paraguay’s trade hub in Alto Paraná is also nearing completion. For further details on infrastructure projects, please visit the Ministry of Public Work and Communication website.
