Coming up soon is an epic celebration of one of everyone’s favourite things: The Sandwich! “World Sandwich Day” is celebrated around the world, every 3rd November.
This World Sandwich Day, in 2024, The Asunción Times is going to do something fun – we’re going to create an actual World Sandwich!
What is a World Sandwich?!?
Also known as an Earth Sandwich, a World Sandwich is essentially a sandwich, with the whole planet as the filling. You know how a cheese sandwich is two pieces of bread with cheese in between? So, same concept… an Earth Sandwich is two pieces of bread with the whole planet in between.
Requirements for making a World Sandwich
There are a few requirements to pull this off:
- The two pieces of bread need to be on the exact antipodes – the precise opposite sides of the world. If the two pieces of bread are not at the perfect positions in terms of longitude and latitude, it’s not a sandwich
- Therefore, you need to have two positions on the Earth that are (a) precisely opposite each other, AND (b) on land. If it’s in the ocean, the bread goes soggy and disintegrates – that’s not a sandwich either
- The two pieces of bread have to be in both positions simultaneously – otherwise it’s not a sandwich
Where to make a World Sandwich, this World Sandwich Day
Whilst only a small percentage of the planet’s landmass is directly opposite another landmass (most of it is opposite ocean), it just so happens that parts of Paraguay are precise antipodes of parts of Taiwan!
So for all the Paraguayan exchange students in Taiwan, such as the ones from UPTP, they’ve literally traveled so far away that they’re already heading back home. Despite being literally as far away from each other as it’s possible to be on this planet, Paraguay and Taiwan have strong relations going back more than 67 years. Taiwan was just the second Asian nation to have diplomatic relations with Paraguay, after Japan.
So this World Sandwich Day, we’re making an actual World Sandwich, from Paraguay and Taiwan, and everywhere in between!
