A football boot can hold the memory of a match and the emotions of millions of fans. For Paraguayan artist Lili Cantero, these objects become more than sports equipment. Through colour, detail and creativity, she transforms boots, footballs and sportswear into artworks that preserve stories connected to sport and the people who make it meaningful.
Who is Lili Cantero?

Lili Cantero is a Paraguayan visual artist known for creating artwork on sports surfaces, especially football boots and other sports equipment. Her work combines her passion for art with sport, letting her collaborate with athletes, brands and organisations internationally. She has created pieces for football icons including Messi, Ronaldinho and Pelé, while also expanding into Formula 1 and basketball.
“What I do is create works of art on different surfaces such as footballs, boots and sportswear in general,” Cantero tells The Asunción Times. “The idea behind my art is always to focus on sport, especially football.”
Finding art in the world of sport
Cantero’s connection between art and sport developed naturally. While studying fashion design, she begins painting different types of clothing. Her friends soon ask her to customise their football boots, opening the door to a new creative path.
As football boots start becoming more colourful and expressive, Cantero notices that players are using them as a way to show their personalities. She begins to see these objects as a unique canvas capable of communicating personal stories.
“Players became more willing to use something different, something that represented them and told part of their story, that is what I always try to do with my work, I try to tell people’s stories through art.”

Turning memories into artwork
For Lili, sports objects carry emotional value because they are connected to important moments in an athlete’s career. A football boot is not only something used during a match, it can also become part of a historic goal, a personal achievement or a memory preserved by fans.
She believes transforming these objects into artworks adds another layer of meaning, allowing them to represent the athlete and the moment they experienced.
“A boot, for example, is the last thing that touches the ball before a goal,” Cantero explains. “Those elements become part of the history of a match.”
A creative process built on research
Before creating a new piece, Cantero begins with research. She studies the story behind each project, whether it involves an athlete, a brand or an event. This allows her to understand the values and emotions she needs to communicate through her designs.
“The creative process begins with research, I investigate what could connect with the person or the brand and how I can communicate that through art.”
When working on football boots, Cantero first removes the factory finish so the paint can adhere properly. She then uses acrylic paints, brushes and sometimes an airbrush before applying a protective layer that allows players to continue using the customised equipment.
Representing Paraguay internationally

While her career continues to grow internationally, Paraguay remains an important source of inspiration for Cantero. She incorporates details influenced by Ñandutí and traditional Paraguayan crafts, carrying elements of her country’s identity into each project.
“Representing Paraguay is something that fills me with pride. My art is very inspired by Paraguay, and through those details I carry Paraguayan art everywhere.”
Beyond representing her country, Cantero hopes her journey creates opportunities for future generations of artists. She remembers beginning her career without a clear example of how far a Paraguayan artist could go and wants others to see that international success is possible.
“I did not have a model to follow when I started. It is beautiful to create that precedent for future artists and show that we are at the same level as any other talent around the world.”
Expanding beyond football
Cantero continues exploring new possibilities within the sports world. After building a strong connection with football, she now looks towards disciplines such as American football, basketball and other international markets.
She also dreams of collaborating with more global brands, creating clothing collections and eventually developing her own brand. For her, each project represents another opportunity to continue learning and growing.
“When I started believing in my work and seeing possibilities in the art world, everything began to change. Today, it is something I dedicate myself to completely.”
Inspiring future artists

Through her career, she hopes to encourage young Paraguayan creatives to pursue their ambitions without limiting themselves. She believes that talent, dedication and the search for opportunities can open doors anywhere in the world.
“Dream big and do not limit yourselves. Today we live in a globalised world where it is possible to access information, opportunities and techniques. Never stop learning and improving.”
From football pitches to international events, Lili Cantero continues proving that art can exist beyond traditional canvases. Through every brushstroke, she can transform sports objects into pieces that connect cultures, tell stories and represent Paraguay on the global stage.
