Gold For Paraguay In Mixed Doubles At South American U-23 Squash Championship

Fiorella Gatti and Damián Casarino, Paraguayan squash players, won the gold medal in the mixed doubles category at the South American Under-23 Squash Championship. The tournament was held in Lima, Peru at the Terrazas Club and the Villa El Salvador Complex. Around 40 players from seven South American countries competed.

The Paraguayan duo defeated Ecuador’s pair in the final in straight games 2-0, with scores of 11-0 and 11-7, securing the title after a dominant performance in the championship match. Paraguay’s results in Lima add to a broader rise in the country’s visibility in South American squash, particularly among younger players competing at the international level.

The victory also marked an important milestone for the pair after falling short in the semifinals of the ASU2025 Pan American Games last year. On that occasion, a Peruvian team prevented them from reaching the final, and thus, the Paraguayan duo won the bronze medal.

The gold medal added to an already successful tournament for Fiorella Gatti (18), who also secured the silver medal in the women’s singles competition after advancing to the final as the squash tournament’s top seed. Gatti faced Brazil’s Laura Silva in the championship match, ultimately falling 3-1 in a closely contested encounter with scores of 13-11, 11-9, 6-11, and 11-5. She then managed to take the third game after Silva opened with two narrow victories. However, Silva ultimately closed out the match in the fourth to claim the title.

Despite the defeat, Gatti emerged as one of Paraguay’s standout athletes at the South American Under-23 Championship. The Paraguayan athlete was showcasing consistency throughout the tournament and continuing her rise on the regional squash championship circuit. Her performances in both singles and mixed doubles show the growing competitiveness of Paraguayan squash at the international level, after Gatti’s gold medal at ASU2025.

Meanwhile, Gatti’s mixed doubles partner, Damián Casarino (22), entered the men’s singles draw as the ninth seed. He also contributed to Paraguay’s strong overall showing in Lima. However, the squash men’s singles title was ultimately won by Peru’s Thiago Cabrejos, who defeated Ecuador’s Javier Romo in a dramatic five-game final. Cabrejos prevailed 3-2 with scores of 9-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-5, and 11-8.
