Paraguay and the Republic of China (Taiwan) have announced a landmark cooperation agreement to develop one of the world’s largest centres for Artificial Intelligence infrastructure. The announcement was made by the President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, during his official tour of Taiwan. This ambitious project aims to combine Taiwan’s world-renowned technological capacity in semiconductor production with Paraguay’s significant generation of renewable energy.
The strategic partnership leverages Taiwan’s position as a global leader in advanced technology and Paraguay’s competitive advantage as a major producer of clean energy. President Peña hailed the agreement as a historic moment with profound implications for the future.
A new era of technological transformation
Speaking about the alliance, Santiago Peña emphasised the scale and ambition of the joint vision. He remarked that the initiative marks a pivotal moment, not just for the two partner nations but for the global technological landscape. He described it as the beginning of a truly significant development for humanity’s future.
“Today two brotherly nations, two giants in vision, determination and courage, mark the beginning of something transcendental for the future of humanity,” President Peña stated.
He further explained that this cooperation agreement projects Paraguay into a new stage of global technological transformation. Consequently, it establishes a clear path for the South American nation to become a premier global hub for artificial intelligence, attracting talent and investment from around the world.
Leveraging national strengths for global impact
The initiative is structured as a 50/50 joint construction effort between both nations, highlighting the balanced and mutual commitment to its success. The core objective is to position Paraguay as a leading destination for high value-added technological investments.
Paraguay’s key strengths include its vast surplus of renewable energy, primarily from hydroelectric sources, which is critical for powering energy-intensive AI data centres. Furthermore, the nation’s consistent macroeconomic stability and its policy of international openness create a secure and welcoming environment for major long-term investments.
The strategic economic shift
This collaboration, according to officals, represents a step towards transforming Paraguay’s economy. It signals a decisive move away from traditional industries and towards a future based on advanced technology, sophisticated data processing, and cutting-edge innovation.
During the closing of his official agenda in Taiwan, Peña underscored the project’s strategic importance in the highly competitive global race for technological supremacy. He confidently positioned the alliance as a major entry into this field.
“With this we join the race for sovereign leadership of artificial intelligence,” Peña underlined.
A foundation of broader cooperation
The agreement on artificial intelligence does not stand in isolation. It is a key component of a wider set of accords signed between Paraguay and Taiwan. These comprehensive agreements also cover crucial areas such as bilateral trade and security, indicating a significant deepening of the relationship between the two long-standing allies.
Ultimately, this historic venture in AI infrastructure serves to solidify and modernise the diplomatic and economic ties between the nations. By collaborating on a project of such forward-looking importance, Paraguay and Taiwan are reinforcing their partnership for the coming decades and building a shared future based on innovation and mutual development.
