Celebrate Paraguay’s Cultural Heritage Day At Herminio Giménez Park In Asunción

Herminio Giménez Park in Asunción is celebrating Paraguay’s Cultural Heritage Day 2026 with festivities on Sunday, 26 April 2026. From 16:00 to 18:00, the park will come alive with music, dance, and community spirit, offering a vibrant tribute to the nation’s living cultural identity. At the centre of the festivities is Herminio Giménez Park, a space widely regarded as a symbol of renewal and grassroots civic action.

On that day, the event will feature performances by the National Orchestra of Popular Music (ONAMP), alongside acclaimed Paraguayan musician José Antonio Galeano, as well as appearances from the Municipal Band and Ballet. Visitors can also be part of an artisan fair organised by the Paraguayan Institute of Handicrafts (IPA), highlighting traditional crafts and local creativity.

A celebration of living heritage at Herminio Giménez Park

The celebration reflects a broader cultural message echoed in the event’s promotion on social media: “heritage is not the past, it is the present in action and the future under construction.” In Paraguay, Cultural Heritage Day serves not only as a commemoration of history but as an active reaffirmation of identity. It is where music, dance, and craftsmanship connect generations and sustain traditions in a modern context.

Organised by the neighbourhood committee, the event is deeply rooted in community initiative. According to organisers, the revitalisation of the plaza itself stands as a testament to what collective effort can achieve. With support from both the private sector and municipal government, residents have transformed the space into a hub for cultural expression and civic pride.

“We are working on re-educating people.”

Organiser Karina Esculies (41) explains to The Asunción Times: “We talk about heritage as something we, as a community, are valuing. We are creating activities for the community and also re-educating ourselves culturally. As Paraguayans, we are used to things being ‘just okay’ or ‘good enough.’ And from this place, from this space that is our plaza, we are also working on that, on re-educating people.”

Beyond its performances, the event represents a renewed sense of connection among neighbours. The organiser emphasises that such initiatives have helped “revitalise the neighbourhood.” These events encourage people to reconnect, recognise one another, and collaborate on shared goals. In a society often accustomed to waiting for institutional action, this model highlights the power of local engagement.

Inspiring broader change

“I think it is very important that this type of activity and this model of action can be replicated in other neighbourhoods, with other communities, with other groups involved, and with municipal support.” Through outreach, particularly social media, organisers hope to inspire similar community efforts elsewhere.

“Just invite everyone,” Esculies concluded, “be part of reviving Paraguay’s culture. We will have dance, music, and Paraguayan roots all in a few hours. It is free, and we are waiting for you to come and experience what it means to be Paraguayan.”
