Paraguay’s Cattle Herd Recovery Advances As Numbers Stabilise At 12.7 Million

Paraguay is beginning to show a cattle herd recovery after a period of contraction, as authorities highlights both increased public investment and a stabilisation in herd numbers. More than US$16 million has already been channelled into projects aimed at rebuilding the national cattle herd, according to official information.

These initiatives are part of a broader effort to support producers and strengthen one of the country’s key economic sectors. Updated figures from mid April 2026 indicate that Paraguay’s cattle population currently stands at more than 12.7 million head.

Investment targets cattle herd recovery efforts

The funding has been directed towards programmes designed to restore livestock numbers and improve productivity across the sector. Authorities have indicated that these measures also seek to enhance resilience among farmers, particularly those affected by adverse climatic conditions in recent years.

In addition to financial support, the recovery plan includes technical assistance and coordination with producers. This is ensuring that investments translate into long-term improvements rather than short-term fixes.

At the same time, the National Service for Animal Quality and Health (SENACSA) has reported encouraging signals in the evolution of the herd. Updated figures from mid April indicate that Paraguay’s cattle population stands at more than 12.7 million head.

While this represents a slight decrease compared to previous years, officials view it as a stabilisation point. According to SENACSA, the decline has been less severe than initially expected, suggesting that the sector may have reached its lowest point.

Producers shift strategies

Part of the cattle herd recovery is being driven by changes in production strategies. Livestock producers have increasingly opted to retain breeding females rather than send them to slaughter. The initiative is aimed at prioritising herd rebuilding over immediate returns.

This approach is considered essential for ensuring sustained growth in the coming years. The strategy allows for a gradual expansion of the cattle population.

Positive outlook amid ongoing challenges

These developments follow the latest vaccination cycle, which achieved high coverage and contributed to maintaining animal health standards nationwide. Strong sanitary control continues to play a crucial role in supporting the cattle herd recovery.

Although challenges remain, particularly those linked to weather conditions and market dynamics, authorities remain cautiously optimistic. The combination of targeted investment, improved animal health management, and strategic adjustments by producers suggests that Paraguay’s cattle sector is entering a phase of gradual recovery.
