The installation of longitudinal beams for a new viaduct over Silvio Pettirossi avenue has commenced, marking a significant phase in the development of the Las Residentas Road Corridor. This new structure is designed to support the future roadway that will improve the connection between the cities of Asunción and Luque.
Initial work has started on the first three spans located within the grounds of the Paraguayan Air Force. Following this, the assembly of the main structures over Silvio Pettirossi avenue itself is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 15 August and Sunday, 16 August, 2026.
Earlier, Paraguay’s Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) already announced diversions on one of the metropolitan area’s busiest roads. The restrictions will be in place from 10 to 30 August 2026, on General Elizardo Aquino Avenue. These are part of ongoing works to improve stormwater drainage along the mentioned Las Residentas Road Corridor.
A new phase of construction
The large longitudinal beams will form the primary support for the concrete slab upon which vehicles will travel. The project aims to create a more fluid traffic flow between the capital city, Asunción, and the nearby city of Luque. Consequently, this will establish a vital link for commuters and commerce in the metropolitan area.
Once the longitudinal beams are securely in place, construction will proceed with the installation of brace beams. These components will unify the structure and provide essential stability to the superstructure. Subsequently, prefabricated slabs will be positioned, paving the way for the construction of the final, definitive roadway of the viaduct.
Improving a critical transport link
The new infrastructure is anticipated to significantly ease traffic congestion and reduce travel times. It addresses one of the most critical access points within the Greater Asunción Metropolitan Area. The project is also expected to enhance logistical and airport connectivity, given its proximity to the Silvio Pettirossi International Airport and the ongoing urban expansion in the region.
The construction works are being carried out by the firm Benito Roggio e Hijos S.A. Funding for the project is provided by the Itaipu Technological Park-Paraguay Foundation (PTI-PY), with oversight and fiscal management from the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC).
