The head of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee (COP), Camilo Pérez, reported that Paraguay has officially announced its candidacy to host, on the one hand, the Youth Olympic Games in 2030, and in 2031 the Pan American Games.
Pérez met with President Santiago Peña on Thursday to discuss progress in the organisation of major sporting events. Thus, a meeting is scheduled for January 31 with the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, in Switzerland, where Pérez said “we will deepen Paraguay’s candidacy.”
Bach visited Paraguay in October of this year, where he highlighted the support of the National Government to the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, which gives strength to the candidacy. Camilo Pérez indicated that the Youth Olympic Games will be the largest event that Paraguay can aspire to organise, with the presence of delegations from 211 countries.
2031 Pan American Games
Another of Paraguay’s candidacies is to host the 2031 Pan American Games, after having reached the final stage in the selection of the 2027 venue, when Asunción lost to Lima.
President Santiago Peña has already signed the guarantee to present Paraguay’s candidacy again to Panam Sports, the organising committee of the Games. The vote will be held on August 7 of next year at the organisation’s assembly in Asunción, he added.
Organising Committee for Paraguay’s Mega Sporting Events
Finally, the COP head reported that there will be a change in the name of the Organising Committee for next year’s Junior Pan American Games, known as ASU 2025.
Given that this same body, which brings together state institutions and the private sector, is also organising the World Rally Championship in Itapúa and the possibility of new candidacies, its functions will be expanded under a new body.
It will be called the “Paraguayan Mega Sporting Events Organising Committee” and its general director will be Víctor Pecci, accompanied by Larissa Schaerer representing the COP, he said.
