Paraguay And US Launch Third Edition Of Amistad Medical Mission

Paraguay and the United States have launched the third edition of the Amistad medical mission. The endeavor brings American and Paraguayan healthcare professionals together in Capiatá, Central Department. Care is now available until 26 June 2026. The initiative will deliver free treatment to selected residents at four Family Health Units within the XI Health Region.

International partnership in action

Amistad, formally titled Strengthening Partnerships Through Global Health Engagements, forms part of an ongoing cooperation effort aimed at improving healthcare delivery while deepening ties between both nations.

Approximately 35 American personnel are participating in the programme, including clinicians, technicians, and support staff. The team has expertise spanning emergency medicine, nursing, optometry, pharmacy and other healthcare disciplines. They are working alongside Paraguayan civilian and military counterparts throughout the mission.

Teams are providing ophthalmology, dentistry, audiology, and family health services to patients. These were previously identified by local health authorities according to community needs and available specialties. The effort is coordinated by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare (MSPBS), the United States Embassy in Paraguay, and the United States Air Forces Southern.

International collaboration building medical preparedness

The United States delegation supplied the medicines and medical equipment required for the operation. Remaining resources will be transferred to local services at the conclusion of the mission, advancing the healthcare capacity in the area. According to organisers, the engagement intends to leave a lasting operational benefit for participating facilities and communities.

Beyond direct patient care, the mission incorporates a series of professional development activities designed to strengthen local capabilities. Paraguayan health workers and military personnel are taking part in training sessions focused on clinical preparedness, healthcare delivery, and emergency response practices.

Friendship across borders

Previous editions have delivered measurable results in Paraguay. During the first phase of the 2024 mission in the Chaco, more than 700 residents, many from Indigenous communities, received medical care through a multinational effort involving Paraguayan, American, and Taiwanese healthcare teams.

Following the conclusion of activities in Paraguay, the initiative will continue later this year in the Dominican Republic as part of a wider regional effort to strengthen health security across the Western Hemisphere.
