Lima narrowly beats Asunción to host 2027 Pan American Games

Peru will host the Pan American Games in 2027, after Lima was chosen by voters from the National Olympic Committees of all competing countries, with 28 votes versus 24 votes for Asunción.

It will be the second time Lima has hosted the games, after previously hosting in 2019. Throughout the contest, the Peruvian delegation had highlighted the that use of the infrastructure already built and used successfully for the 2019 games was very much in line with efforts to promote sustainability.

Similarly, the Paraguayan delegation pointed out that Asunción is already preparing to host the Junior Pan American Games in 2025, and so is very well placed to host the 2027 event.

That the two cities were competing for the honour at all is due to the removal of the previously-chosen host city, Barranquilla in Colombia. Barranquilla was removed as host by the Pan American Sports Organisation, known as Panam Sports, due to the Colombian Ministry of Sports allegedly failing to meet contractual obligations, including non-payment of monies owed to Panam Sports.

The games will feature athletes from all 41 countries in the Americas, North and South, competing in 39 different sports, in September 2027.
