Mexican artist El David Aguilar is set to arrive in Asunción as part of the Suena 2026 series, bringing what he describes as a project of “free songs” to Paraguayan audiences. The performance, scheduled for Saturday 25 April 2026 at 21:00, will take place at La Esquina Cooltural and forms part of a wider Latin American tour.
Speaking with The Asunción Times about his artistic identity, Aguilar offers a definition that feels both open and deliberate. “It is a project of free-form songwriting, where musical genres are used freely,” he explains. His work blends intimate and social themes, positioning itself within what he calls “Latin American popular song.”
El David Aguilar’s first encounter with Paraguay

For El David Aguilar, this visit carries particular emotional weight. “I have never been to Paraguay. It will be my first time, and I am very happy about it.” The concert in Asunción will also stand out as one of the more intimate dates on his tour, which includes cities such as Buenos Aires and Córdoba.
This sense of discovery extends beyond the performance itself. When asked about the Paraguayan music scene, Aguilar admits, “I do not have many references, which is also why I am very excited to go.” The statement suggests an openness to exchange, aligning with his broader artistic philosophy.
Aguilar’s approach to music is deeply tied to language and identity. “Language plays a central role in my process,” he notes, highlighting the importance of words not only as tools but as the core of his creative work. At the same time, he resists being confined to a single genre. “I call it ‘free song’ because I do not restrict myself to any genre. Instead, I explore intuitively.” This fluidity is reflected in his influences, which range from folk traditions to contemporary pop. His perspective on identity also moves beyond national frameworks. “For me, Latin American regional identity is very important. I believe it is a good time to move beyond national identities and strengthen a regional one.”
A career in constant evolution
With 15 Latin Grammy nominations and collaborations with artists such as Julieta Venegas and Jorge Drexler, who will also perform in Asunción, Aguilar has built a solid career while maintaining a sense of artistic exploration. His recent work continues in that direction. His latest single, “Casita Bella”, reflects this evolving sound. The acoustic piece draws on memory and nostalgia, while also echoing the melancholy of traditional Mexican forms. The result is a song that invites listeners into a reflective, almost cinematic experience.
El David Aguilar is already considering deeper connections with the region. “Of course. I would love to build artistic connections with Paraguay and other countries in South America,” he says, pointing towards future collaborations. As Suena 2026 brings international artists to Paraguay, Aguilar’s debut in Asunción aims to create a moment of encounter, where music, language, and identity intersect in conversation with a new audience.
