The Asunción City Symphony Orchestra (OSCA) will hold a free public performance in the Santísima Trinidad neighbourhood on Tuesday, 8 September 2026. This event is part of its ongoing “Sinfonía Divertida en los Barrios de Asunción” (Fun Symphony in the Neighbourhoods of Asunción) concert series. The performance will take place at 20:00 at the Escuela Básica N.º 215 Prof. Emilio Ferreira.
Under the baton of conductor José Miguel Echeverría, the orchestra will present its fifth concert in the series. The programme has been designed to appeal to a wide audience, with the goal of bringing symphonic music to diverse communities across the capital. The initiative aims to make classical music more accessible by moving beyond traditional concert halls.
A programme for all ages
The repertoire for the evening features a mix of classical European pieces and celebrated Paraguayan compositions. A special highlight of the concert will be an interactive performance of Joseph Haydn’s “Toy Symphony,” where children from the audience will be invited to participate with the orchestra. This segment underscores the family-friendly nature of the event.
Additionally, the concert will feature several of the orchestra’s own musicians as soloists. The lineup includes Nicole González on percussion and Néstor Barreto and Vicente Vera on trumpets. Furthermore, a Paraguayan harp ensemble will feature Marcos Lucena, Victoria Cáceres, Anahí Marecos, Benjamín Marecos, Félix Marecos, and Mónica Lucena. Vocalist Hugo Valenzuela will also perform.
Celebrating Paraguayan masters
A significant portion of the programme is dedicated to the centenary of the birth of Luis Alberto del Paraná, one of Paraguay’s most internationally renowned musicians. To mark the occasion, the orchestra will perform his works “Mi guitarra y mi voz” and “Bajo el cielo del Paraguay.” 2026 is the year of Paraguayan musician Luis Alberto Del Paraná.
The evening will also showcase a variety of other well-known pieces. The audience will hear Antonín Dvořák’s “Slavonic Dance No. 1” and the “Waltz” from Léo Delibes’ ballet, “Coppélia.” The selection of Paraguayan music includes “Caturi Abente” by Prudencio Giménez, “Filigrana” by Digno García, and “Cholí” by the creator of the Guarania genre, José Asunción Flores. The concert will conclude with the lively “Spanish Flea” by Julius Wechter and Leroy Anderson’s inventive “The Typewriter.”
Community and cultural partnership
The concert is held at a significant local venue, the Prof. Emilio Ferreira school, which celebrates its own centenary tin 2026 and is considered a historic part of the Santísima Trinidad community. This choice of location, according to organisers, reflects the series’ commitment to integrating cultural events into the daily life of the city’s neighbourhoods.
This event is organised by the General Directorate of Culture and Tourism of the Municipality of Asunción in partnership with the Asunción Philharmonic Society. The concert series is presented with the support of the Itaú Foundation and Petrobras, both of which are active in sponsoring cultural initiatives in Paraguay.
