Paraguay is set to expand its international air links with a new direct route between Asunción and Montevideo, Uruguay. The Asunción-Montevideo route is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027, operating with five weekly flights, pending final approval from the relevant authorities.
In addition to this new connection, the frequency of flights to São Paulo, Brazil, and Lima, Peru, will also be increased. This expansion aims to provide more options for connecting Paraguay with key regional and international hubs.
Expansion plans discussed at presidential residence
The operational expansion of LATAM in Paraguay was a key topic during a meeting with the President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, at Mburuvicha Róga, the official presidential residence in Asunción. The meeting coincided with the airline’s 30th anniversary of operations in the country.
During the discussion, national authorities and airline executives explored new routes, increased flight frequencies, and the opportunities that enhanced air connectivity presents for tourism, business, and trade.
A collaborative effort for growth
Nelson Mendoza, the President of the National Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DINAC), stated that the company’s projects for Paraguay were analysed during the meeting. He emphasised the joint effort to create conditions that facilitate the expansion of routes and frequencies from Silvio Pettirossi International Airport.
The CEO of LATAM Airlines Group, Roberto Alvo, announced that the new connection with Montevideo will feature five weekly flights. He highlighted the planned expansion of operations from Paraguay. Currently, the airline operates 26 weekly frequencies and aims to increase this to 32 by the end of this year, and to 37 with the addition of the new route.
“It is an additional step in the development that we see for LATAM in the region to connect Paraguay, not only within South America, but also through our connection centres in São Paulo, Santiago and Lima with the world,” expressed Alvo.
Economic impact and strategic vision
Javier Viveros, Paraguay’s acting Minister of Industry and Commerce, underscored the potential impact of greater connectivity on economic activity, employment, business, and tourism. He noted that the objective is to continue expanding connections to leverage the country’s strategic position and strengthen Paraguay as a connection point in the heart of South America.
The Asunción-São Paulo route will progressively increase from 14 to 18 weekly flights. Meanwhile, the connection with Lima will rise from seven to nine weekly frequencies starting in October, representing a 28% increase. From São Paulo, passengers can access more than 60 domestic destinations within Brazil and over 25 international connections.
Passenger and cargo figures show growth
Throughout 2025, LATAM Paraguay transported over 340,000 passengers. Between January and June of this year, the airline moved approximately 158,000 people. In the cargo sector, the group transported 7,400 tonnes to and from Paraguay over the last year, with operations to seven international destinations.
The movement of cargo saw a year-on-year growth of 22%, while export sales increased by 70%, reflecting a greater connection of national products with foreign markets. With the new Montevideo service and increased frequencies to other destinations, Paraguay is broadening its air connection network and improving conditions for tourism, business, and trade, supporting an expanding aviation operation from the country.
