Paraguayan Band Mi Sueño Póstumo Shines Opening For Argentina’s Winona Riders

On an exciting night in May 2026, Paraguayan band Mi Sueño Póstumo took the stage to open for Argentina’s acclaimed band Winona Riders. The concert became a defining moment in the young band’s journey, connecting local ambition with international recognition.

Held in Asunción, the show drew one of the largest audiences Mi Sueño Póstumo had ever faced. For the band, it was both a test of resilience and a celebration of identity, showcasing their raw alternative rock before Winona Riders’ marathon set. As vocalist Rafa Cosia reflects to The Asunción Times: “I want the energy of the band to be associated with frenzy and euphoria. That is what resonates most with the crowd.”

How Mi Sueño Póstumo began

Formed in late 2021, Mi Sueño Póstumo (meaning My Posthumous Dream in English) emerged from the ashes of a previous project involving vocalist Rafa Cosia and guitarist Santiago Florentín. Initially performing with the frontman of Chico Plastic, which is another local band, but the group dissolved quickly.

“When the first band ended, Santiago and I kept making music together. That chemistry was the start of Mi Sueño Póstumo.”

Finally, in 2022, bassist Sofía Ferreira and drummer Daniel Ríos joined, solidifying the line‑up. With the guidance of their manager, Nicolás Martínez, the band began performing live shows to fund their first recordings, which were released in 2024.

Opening for Winona Riders

The turning point came when Mi Sueño Póstumo were invited to open for Winona Riders during their South American tour. Far from a sudden announcement, the opportunity was the result of months of planning and networking. International booker Gabriel Pico, who had arranged Winona Riders’ Latin American tour, connected with the band’s manager, leading to their inclusion in the Paraguay concert.

For Rafa, the experience was both exhilarating and nerve‑wracking: “I let the weight of the event get to me. Next time, I would try not to overthink it.” Despite the nerves, the band delivered a high‑energy set designed to ignite the crowd before Winona Riders’ three‑hour performance.

Defining the sound

Mi Sueño Póstumo’s music is best described as alternative rock, characterised by dissonance, distortion, and raw emotion. Their songs reflect the band’s DIY approach, having been recorded at home rather than in professional studios. Therefore, their approach adds a unique texture to their work.

For Rafa, the music is deeply personal: “I spent years bottling up feelings. Music is where I can release them. It is not about polished perfection; it is about honesty.” Also, he shares about his bandmate Santiago’s perspective, “He himself says, ‘It is a potion for pain.’”

A fan’s perspective

The night was marked by familiar faces at the front, cheering passionately, alongside newcomers discovering the band for the first time. Rafa described the thrill of seeing fans sing along: “It is a strange but incredible feeling. When someone knows the lyrics, it is surreal.” While some audience members appeared uncertain, the overall response was positive, with many leaving intrigued by the band’s distinctive sound.

For many in the audience, the night was marked by anticipation and a sense of cultural connection. Fan Erika Galarza described the atmosphere: “It was really nice to see this group of people combined because we were both fans of our local bands, but we also wanted to see the other band.”

Erika highlighted the band’s choice of songs, noting: “The first song that they played was ‘Mi Yo Mecánico,’ which really shows Mi Sueño Póstumo’s versatility. It was really interesting to have that comparison because although they are not entirely the same, they do combine. They can match, and it is like the energy flows well.”

Lessons, future projects, and a night to remember

Opening for Winona Riders taught Mi Sueño Póstumo valuable lessons in event production and resilience. Looking ahead, the band plans fewer but more meaningful shows, while focusing on new recordings, two singles this year, and a full album in 2027. Their next major performance is on 13 June at Uma Multiespacios, alongside bands Vecindad Autopsia, Flema, and Masacre.

For Rafa, the highlight of the night was not on stage but afterwards, enjoying Winona Riders’ set with friends: “That was the highlight, being in the crowd, relaxed, and sharing the music.” The experience reflects a band determined to push beyond local boundaries, bringing their raw, alternative sound to wider audiences.
