Paraguay is preparing to host a global sporting event with the arrival of L’Étape Encarnación by Tour de France. The prestigious competition is scheduled to take place on 31 May, 2026, in the city of Encarnación. This event is an officially licensed race from Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), the organisation that runs the renowned Tour de France.
The race is part of the international L’Étape by Tour de France series. This series successfully translates the experience of professional cycling to amateur athletes of varying skill levels in countries around the globe. Consequently, it offers a unique opportunity for non-professional cyclists to participate in a race with the same high standards and atmosphere as a stage of the famous French tour.
A major draw for international athletes
According to the official bulletin, the competition is expected to attract a considerable number of national and international cyclists. Participants from neighbouring Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Chile are anticipated, along with riders from other nations. This influx of competitors will help to consolidate Paraguay’s emerging reputation as a new and capable destination for high-level sporting events.
The organisation has highlighted that this inaugural edition provides a unique chance for local athletes to experience an official Tour de France event without needing to travel abroad. This accessibility is expected to foster greater interest and participation in the sport across the nation. The event is being organised by Rebelocity, which holds the official license from ASO.
The city of Encarnación was carefully selected as the host city due to its excellent urban infrastructure, appealing tourist environment, and substantial hotel capacity, making it well-equipped to handle a large-scale international event.
A new era for Paraguayan sport
Carlos Rodrigo Recalde Larrea, the General Director of Rebelocity, commented on the significance of bringing the race to the country. He noted that the arrival of L’Étape in Paraguay signals a major step forward for national sport.
“It represents the country’s entry into one of the most prestigious sports circuits in the world,” Recalde Larrea stated, also emphasising the nation’s broader potential for hosting large-scale international events, suggesting this is just the beginning of a new chapter for Paraguayan sport.
Routes designed for all abilities
The competition will feature three distinct route modalities to cater for a wide range of physical preparation and experience. Participants can choose between a long course of 141 kilometres, a medium course of 61.5 kilometres, and a short course of 30 kilometres. These options are specifically designed to accommodate everyone from seasoned endurance athletes to recreational cyclists and newcomers to the sport.
The organisers have confirmed that the circuits were planned in strict accordance with the international standards of L’Étape. In addition, the routes have been designed to leverage the unique geography and scenic attractions of Encarnación, promising a challenging yet visually rewarding experience for all riders. The different distances ensure the event is inclusive and encourages widespread participation from the entire cycling community.
Strengthening regional and future ties
The event is also poised to have a significant regional dimension. This is largely due to Encarnación’s close proximity to the Argentine city of Posadas, which is connected by the San Roque González de Santa Cruz International Bridge. Posadas’ International Airport will serve as one of the primary points of entry for international participants.
Furthermore, the organisation has announced that L’Étape Encarnación will not be an isolated event. Paraguay is set to become a regular fixture in the circuit, with plans to host L’Étape San Bernardino in September 2026.
Registrations for the upcoming competition are now open through the official L’etape Series website, and anticipation continues to build among cyclists, sports clubs, and fans across the region.
