The theatrical production “In the Shadows” (En Penumbras), a work blending humour with social observation, is scheduled to premiere its new season at Casa Argentina in Asunción on 22, 23, and 24 May, 2026. This new play follows the success of the 2019 theatrical hit “In the Light” (A la Luz), which ran for 15 performances and attracted an audience of more than 1,000 people within the Paraguay’s national theatre circuit.
A story of family dynamics and hidden truths
“In the Shadows” presents the story of two couples of in-laws who finally meet for a dinner that has been long postponed. What initially appears to be a cordial encounter slowly begins to fracture as the evening progresses, giving way to reproaches, sharp irony, and old resentments that rise to the surface.
Through a series of situations described as absurdly recognisable, the play constructs an uncomfortable yet profoundly relatable portrait of family bonds. Furthermore, it explores the complexities of social differences and the realities that are often concealed behind a facade of education and good manners. The narrative encourages audiences to reflect on the nature of human relationships and social pretences.
A contemporary stage experience
The new staging aims to deliver a contemporary theatrical experience, sustained primarily by the strength of the actors’ performances and the precise rhythm of a comedy where appearances progressively crumble in front of the audience. The production seeks to create a piece that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, using humour as a vehicle to explore deeper societal issues.
The direction from Carlos Arbués proposes a staging where tension and humour constantly coexist, building an atmosphere that is at once elegant, uncomfortable, and explosive. This approach ensures a dynamic viewing experience, keeping the audience engaged as the characters navigate their increasingly fraught interactions.
The creative team and cast

“In the Shadows” was written by the Paraguayan playwright Santiago Filártiga Lamar and is being produced by E’Ana Productora. The play brings together a cast of acclaimed actors including Regina Bachero, Calolo Rodríguez, Dani González, Chela Villagra, and Karina Otazú. The performers are noted for their extensive experience across Paraguayan theatre, television, and cinema.
Each cast member contributes a significant professional background. Bachero is a leading figure in Paraguay’s independent and street theatre scenes. In addition, Rodríguez boasts a long career in both theatre and audiovisual fiction. Dani González has developed a career linked to theatre, audiovisual media, and artistic training. Villagra has been part of major productions with Arlequín Teatro and the Municipal Classic and Modern Ballet, while Otazú is a prominent figure in the contemporary independent scene with participation in national theatre and film.
Behind the scenes

The team includes Elenita Aquino as assistant director, Angie Pedrozo as production assistant, and Joshua Roa as floor manager. The aesthetic elements of the play are handled by Samuel Paniagua for graphic design, Santiago Schaerer for lighting, and Inocencia Fernández for makeup, each contributing to the overall atmosphere of the performance.
