The Government of Paraguay has entered into discussions with two of Taiwan’s principal airlines, China Airlines and EVA Airways, to explore the creation of a new direct air route between Taipei and Asunción. The Taipei-Asunción flights initiative, led by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC), aims to leverage Paraguay’s strategic location to establish it as a key logistics and connection hub for South America.
These preliminary talks represent a step in strengthening economic and logistical ties between the two nations. A Paraguayan delegation presented a comprehensive overview of the country’s potential, highlighting the sustained growth in trade between Paraguay and Taiwan over the past decade as a key driver for the proposed air link.
The delgation presented data on regional trade flows and logistical infrastructure, making a case for the commercial viability of a new passenger and cargo route.
Exploring alternative connectivity options
In addition to a direct route, the parties also analysed an alternative connectivity model. This potential route would follow an Asia-United States-South America path, a concept designed to integrate with the existing structures of the international aviation market. Recently, GOL Airlines postponed the June 2026 launch of direct Asunción to Miami flights.
By considering this alternative, officials aim to provide a more flexible framework for the airlines. Such a route could leverage existing flight authorisations and airport slots in the United States, potentially accelerating the project’s implementation while still providing a valuable connection between Asia and Paraguay.
The proposed route would open up significant new avenues for both passenger transport and the development of air cargo services. Enhanced cargo capacity is particularly important for facilitating trade in high-value goods, which could provide a substantial boost to the economies of both Paraguay and Taiwan.
Next steps in the evaluation process
As a direct result of the meeting, the Paraguayan delegation will now forward more detailed information to the airlines. This data package will include comprehensive technical and commercial figures to support a thorough evaluation. Representatives from both airlines expressed an interest in learning more about Paraguay’s market potential.
The information provided will allow the carriers to conduct in-depth feasibility studies. These assessments will analyse factors such as potential passenger demand, cargo volumes, operational costs, and projected revenue. The outcome of these studies will be crucial in determining the viability of establishing a route that includes Paraguay in the airlines’ international networks.
Strengthening bilateral ties through aviation
Ultimately, the Taipei-Asunción flights initiative extends beyond simple logistics, aiming to significantly strengthen the bilateral relationship between Paraguay and Taiwan. The push for enhanced air connectivity is a clear signal of Paraguay’s commitment to deepening its international partnerships and fostering economic growth.
The successful establishment of a new air link would represent a landmark achievement in the relationship between the two nations. It would facilitate greater trade, investment, and tourism, creating new opportunities for growth.
