The planned launch of a direct flight route between Asunción and Miami has been postponed, Paraguay’s national civil aviation authority announced. The Brazilian carrier GOL had originally scheduled the commencement of its new service for 8 June, 2026. However, the airline has now officially delayed the start of these operations.
The announcement came from the Dirección Nacional de Aeronáutica Civil (National Directorate of Civil Aeronautics), commonly known as Dinac. According to the statement, the service was set to operate with four weekly flights, providing a significant new connection between Paraguay and the United States. The postponement represents a delay in what was anticipated to be a major enhancement for international travel from the country.

The sharp rise in international jet fuel prices is named by sources as the primary driver behind GOL’s decision to postpone the direct Asunción to Miami flights. Global jet fuel costs have roughly doubled (or surged 95-40% in many benchmarks) since late February 2026, triggered by the escalation of conflict in the Middle East involving the US, Israel, and Iran.
This has severely disrupted crude oil and refined product flows through the Strait of Hormuz – a critical chokepoint for roughly 20% of global oil supply and a major source of jet fuel for many regions.
Official notification and confirmation
Dinac confirmed it received formal notification of the decision from the airline’s legal representative in Paraguay, Alejandro Guanes Mersán. The communication was officially documented through Resolution No. 315/2026. This formal procedure underscores the official nature of the postponement, moving it from speculation to a confirmed change in the airline’s operational schedule.
In its communication, GOL emphasised its continued commitment to the Paraguayan market. The airline reportedly reiterated its strong interest in maintaining institutional cooperation with the Paraguayan aviation authority. Furthermore, the company assured Dinac that it would provide timely updates regarding the rescheduling of the inaugural flight and the commencement of regular operations on the new route.

Following the announcement, the president of Dinac, Nelson Mendoza, addressed the situation. Mendoza affirmed that the regulatory process for the route will proceed in accordance with all current regulations. He stated that the authority is now awaiting confirmation from GOL of a new launch date for the Asunción-Miami service. His comments suggest that the administrative and legal frameworks for the route remain in place, pending a revised timeline from the airline.
