People Of Asunción #9, Clarice Ortega From Paraguay: “I Came Back Because I Want To Contribute”

People from every corner of the globe are drawn to Asunción, where Paraguay’s laid-back capital has quietly become a melting pot of cultures, ideas, and ambition. Each Tuesday evening from 18:00 to 21:00, digital nomads, expats, and friendly locals come together at the ever-popular English networking event organised by The Asunción Times. Held in a different charming bar or restaurant across the city every week, these gatherings offer the perfect blend of Paraguayan warmth and international energy. In this “People of Asunción” series, we introduce the inspiring individuals who make this scene so uniquely alive. In #9, Clarice Ortega from Paraguay.

Meet Clarice Ortega

Clarice Ortega (28) is an electrical engineer who recently returned to Paraguay after spending two years living and studying in Europe. Now, she works remotely for a United States-based company while planning her next professional steps at home. After completing a master’s degree in Ireland and gaining work experience abroad, she made the decision to come back to Asunción in search of purpose, family, and opportunity.

Why exactly did you return to Paraguay?

“First of all, my family is here. And also, I want to contribute to my country. There are a lot of things to do over here. Electrical stuff over here is rising, so I thought I should try things here.”

What are your plans for the future?

“Right now, I am working remotely. But I plan to start something in my field sometime.”

What do you love most about Paraguay?

“The people. The people over here are very, very nice. When I was living in Europe, they were okay. I am not saying they were bad to me. But we are different. Paraguayans are super friendly to people who are coming. I like the people over here.”

What is your favourite place in Asunción and why?

“My favourite place right now would be the restaurant Suki. It is super nice. I really like the food over there. I am kind of like a foodie, and I like Korean food a lot. But I like trying new things from time to time.”

What do you enjoy now that you are back in Paraguay?

“I like the weather. Since I came back, I have been trying to travel across Latin America. I went to Colombia and to Argentina. I am trying to travel more. It is easy right now that I am working remotely. I like the freedom of it.”

If you had to move away again, what would you take with you from Paraguay?

“Some meat. Oh my God. The meat in Ireland. People there said that the meat was nice. But I was craving some asado from Paraguay. My favourite food is asado. So, yeah. I guess like beef from here. I love it.”
