Through the Vice Ministry for the Protection of Women’s Rights, the Ministry of Women has launched a WhatsApp helpline as an accessible support network for individuals experiencing situations of violence or danger. This service complements the national domestic violence helpline, SOS Mujer 137.
Digitally accessible support systems
Vice Minister Stela Villamayor emphasised that the WhatsApp helpline expands access for women who may be unable to speak during moments of distress, by providing guidance, support, and emotional containment through text messages.
This new tool adapts to modern communication preferences. “We know that nowadays many women prefer texting rather than making phone calls, due to feelings of shame, fear, or safety concerns,” Villamayor explained.
The WhatsApp number serves as an additional channel alongside the national domestic violence support line. Both services are available 24 hours a day, free of charge, along with other national emergency numbers. The implementation of these rapid-response channels aims to strengthen first responders’ abilities to respond through active listening, strategic support, and swift action.
Providing support in person
Also available to individuals experiencing violence is the Women’s Support Service (Servicio de Atención a la Mujer – SEDAMUR). This service forms part of the Ministry of Women’s public policies aimed at preventing violence and protecting women in unsafe situations. It works in coordination with other state institutions to guarantee safety for those seeking assistance.
“Each woman comes to us with a unique story, which is why our support is personalised, respectful and confidential. Our commitment is to listen, provide emotional support, guide and protect. We understand that no two situations are the same, which is why our approach must be human and close at hand,” stated Vice Minister Stela Villamayor.
SEDAMUR provides confidential, free-of-charge support during weekdays at its office located on the corner of Pdte. Franco and Ayolas streets in Asunción. The service operates from Monday to Friday, between 7:00 and 16:00, offering guidance and assistance to those who need it. For immediate support or enquiries, individuals can contact the WhatsApp hotline or call the SOS Mujer line at 137.
