Paraguay Will Host The UN Tourism Office For South America’s Jesuit Route

Paraguay will host the Technical Secretariat for the Jesuit Route, starting operating in 2026. This UN Tourism Office will strengthen the management of this multi-destination route. Furthermore, the bureau will enhance its historical, cultural, and spiritual value and benefit local communities.

The Mercosur countries accepted Paraguay’s proposal at their 33rd Assembly. The United Nations Tourism Office and the Latin American and Caribbean Development Bank are also part of the project. Paraguay’s UN Tourism Office will be integrated into the network of regional offices promoted by UN Tourism in South America.

The Jesuit Route, and Paraguay’s purpose

The Jesuit Route, also known as the Ruta Jesuítica or Missions Road, is a captivating 750-kilometer pilgrimage trail weaving through the verdant landscapes of southern Paraguay, northeastern Argentina, and southwestern Brazil, spotlighting the 17th- and 18th-century reductions; self-sustaining communities founded by Jesuit missionaries among the Guaraní people

“Our purpose now is to consolidate a regional operational structure that will increase the visibility of this multi-destination route,”said then-Minister of Tourism Angie Duarte of Paraguay. “Enhancing its tourism and heritage value, and boosting local economies through authentic, inclusive, and sustainable cultural experiences,”

The Jesuit Route will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2026.

Next step for Paraguay’s UN Tourism Office

Among the first steps planned are the joint development of a comprehensive assessment, and the design of a regional Action Plan. In addition, a monitoring and evaluation system for activities will be established. This structure, tailor-made for this UN Tourism Office, aims to ensure the active participation of all countries involved in this regional tourist route. The Jesuit Route has high historical, cultural, and spiritual value.

During the meeting, other topics were addressed, such as the Joint Tourism Promotion initiative “Visit South America.” Mercosur agreed to have a regional presence at international trade fairs, with a stand representing all its member nations. The pro tempore President would be responsible for negotiating to optimise this presence.

Likewise, other touristic projects were discussed, such as the Regional Gastronomic Tourism. Football and Stadiums projects were also topics of discussion. The Southern Natural Route was also mentioned, reaffirming the commitment to strengthening tourism integration and cooperation in the region.
