Seeds Of Growth: Paraguay’s Chía And Sesame Exports Flourish

In 2025, Paraguay’s agricultural sector continues to expand beyond its traditional crops of soy and beef. The country’s farmers are increasingly turning towards alternative products that meet changing global needs. In recent years, exports of chía and sesame seeds have shown steady and reliable growth, reflecting both rising global demand and local innovation in sustainable production methods. This new direction is reshaping Paraguay’s agricultural identity and helping rural communities benefit from international markets.

A growing export success

Over the past five years, exports of chía and sesame have shown impressive progress. According to data from the Single Export Window (Ventanilla Única de Exportación, VUE), Paraguay exported more than 68,000 tonnes of chía in 2024. This accomplishment was nearly three times higher than the volume registered in 2020. Meanwhile, sesame followed closely behind, also showing remarkable growth. Between 2023 and 2024, exports reached 29,000 tonnes, representing a 29% increase compared to the previous year. Furthermore, by August 2025, the country had already surpassed expectations, shipping over 44,000 tonnes of sesame and exceeding the five-year average of 42,600 tonnes.

This consistent growth has been supported by both small producers and large agribusinesses. In addition, many of them are adopting environmentally friendly techniques and modern processing systems. These changes help to improve productivity and quality. As a result, Paraguay continues to strengthen its position as a reliable and competitive agricultural exporter.

Markets and partnerships

Paraguayan chía currently reaches health-conscious consumers in the United States, the Netherlands, Germany, Bolivia, and the United Kingdom, while sesame is prized in Japan and Mexico, with new interest emerging from Taiwan, Turkey, and China. These strong trade relationships have been sustained through strict phytosanitary oversight by the National Service for Plant and Seed Quality and Health (Senave), ensuring compliance with international standards. Collaboration between exporters, cooperatives, and government agencies has been crucial in maintaining Paraguay’s reputation for purity and flavor in crops.

Chía and sesame shaping a sustainable future

As global consumers continue to seek healthier oils and superfoods, Paraguay’s farmers are reaping the benefits of this shift. Chía and sesame have become symbols of diversification and opportunity, strengthening rural economies and proving that even the smallest seeds can drive sustainable growth.
