Paraguayan international Orlando Gill has been officially unveiled as a new player for French Ligue 1 club LOSC Lille. The transfer follows his standout performance for Paraguay’s national team during the 2026 World Cup, where he concluded as the tournament’s leading goalkeeper in terms of saves, according to official statistics released by FIFA.
Gill, who was a key figure for manager Gustavo Alfaro’s squad, has made the move to European football from the Argentine club San Lorenzo. During the 2026 World Cup, the internet flooded by Gill’s tearful story of sacrifice and redemption, redeeming a past defined by sacrifice, poverty, and unwavering devotion to his family. The goalkeeper’s new contract with Lille will run until 2031.
Details of the transfer
The deal for Gill was finalised at just over €4 million, approximately US$4.65 million. The agreement secures 100% of the player’s sporting rights and 50% of his economic rights for the French side.
Previously, Gill had established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper for San Lorenzo in Argentina, having initially joined the squad as a reserve.
A story of personal sacrifice
The move represents a significant moment in a career marked by personal hardship. Gill previously sold his own football shirts, including one from his time with the Paraguayan youth teams, to fund medical treatment for his son, Lautaro. Lautaro was born prematurely in 2022 and required intensive care and medication during a financially difficult period for the family.
Fortunately, his son has since made a full recovery and has been able to attend several of his father’s matches. In a notable act of kindness, the supporter who bought Gill’s Under-20s national team shirt later returned it to him.
From club success to national hero
Within less than five years, Gill’s perseverance was rewarded. He became the primary goalkeeper for San Lorenzo de Almagro, earning a call-up to the Albirroja (The White and Red), Paraguay’s national team, for the World Cup qualifiers.
He was subsequently chosen as the starting goalkeeper for the World Cup itself. Gill became a national hero during the tournament’s round of sixteen, where he was pivotal in a penalty shootout victory over Germany. He saved two crucial penalties, denying both Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade to secure the team’s win.
Following in a legend’s footsteps
With this transfer, Orlando Gill becomes only the second Paraguayan goalkeeper to play in the top tier of French football. He follows in the footsteps of the legendary José Luis Chilavert, who played for Racing Club de Strasbourg from 2000 to 2002.
Strasbourg was also the former club of fellow Paraguayan international Julio Enciso before his recent transfer to Ipswich Town.
