English Premier League Football team Brighton, today made official the purchase of the Paraguayan international Diego Gómez, from Inter Miami of the MLS.
In September, Brighton announced that they would buy Gomez for £11 million ($14 million) and that the 21-year-old would stay in Miami until the end of the 2024 season. Miami said Brighton paid a record fee, which is “among the most expensive transfers in MLS history.”
The footballer will officially join Brighton on January 1 when the winter transfer window opens in Europe.
“We look forward to working with Diego very soon,” said Brighton manager Fabian Huertzeler. “He has made a great impression both at club and international level.
“Like all young players coming from abroad, he will need a period of adaptation to the Premier League, but I feel he can make a big contribution and I look forward to working with him.”
Gomez played 28 times for Miami in 2024 before missing some time with an ankle injury. He had six goals and seven assists and ranked No. 1 in MLS U-22 scoring in October. He joined Miami in 2023 from Paraguayan club Libertad on a contract through 2026, with one more year.
The 31-year-old Brighton boss has the tools to get the most out of the club’s teenage talent.
Gómez represented Paraguay’s senior national team and his country’s under-23 team at the Paris Olympics last summer, when they lost to Egypt in the quarter-finals.
Gómez joins his compatriot and fellow international player Julio Encisco at Brighton as they strengthen their team and build on their recent success of consistent good performances in the world’s best football league.
