Asunción’s Costanera became a meeting point for hundreds of volunteers participating in the tenth edition of the Plantatón event. The initiative seeks to expand green spaces while raising awareness about the city’s environmental future. The event brought together multiple institutions and participants, and The Asunción Times went to have a look.
The evolution of an idea
Over the past ten years, Plantatón has evolved from a symbolic activity into a structured environmental movement across Paraguay. During the event, organisers explained that the initiative “has become much more than a symbolic act of planting trees.” They added that Plantatón now functions as a citizen platform that continues to grow in participation and environmental impact each year. This transformation reflects a shift toward sustained environmental engagement involving multiple sectors of society.
Plantatón relies on coordination between public institutions, private companies, environmental organisations, and volunteer citizens across Paraguay. Each edition depends on shared participation, where multiple sectors contribute to planning, logistics, and execution of the initiative. The collaboration is what allows the project to expand and maintain consistency over time. This structure turns individual participation into a unified effort with visible impact across the city.
From a local initiative to a citywide movement
Plantatón began as a small initiative with the simple idea of bringing people together to plant trees in public spaces. In its early years, participation was limited, but the message remained consistent. The aim has always been about encouraging environmental awareness through direct action.
Over time, the initiative gradually expanded as more institutions, organisations, and citizens joined the effort each year. This progression transformed Plantatón from a local activity into a recognised platform for urban reforestation in Paraguay.

Expanding the target
This year’s tenth edition of the Plantatón marked a milestone with an ambitious goal of planting trees as part of a coordinated effort. Organisers described this moment as a turning point, highlighting the maturity reached after a decade of continuous action. They emphasised that environmental transformation requires scale, continuity, and collective commitment from all sectors involved. The initiative reflects both its expansion over time and the increasing urgency of urban environmental challenges.
Beyond planting trees

Although the event centres on planting trees, the impact extends far beyond the physical act itself. Trees function as natural infrastructure, helping regulate temperature, improve air quality, and support the urban water cycle. Speakers highlighted that understanding trees in this way is essential for building more livable and resilient cities. Expanding green spaces in Asunción contributes directly to long-term stability and quality of life.
Plantatón emphasisd an extended responsibility and the importance of action for future generations. Each tree planted represents life, hope, and a shared responsibility toward the future. The initiative supports the idea that collective decisions today create the legacy of the city.
