National Measles Vaccination Drive Sees Coverage Reach 89% In Paraguay

Paraguay’s Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare announced a significant increase in vaccination rates following its National Vaccination Day. The nationwide measles vaccination campain has boosted the National Campaign against Measles and Rubella, achieving a figure of 89% coverage across the country. Consequently, a total of 420,646 children have now been vaccinated as part of this critical public health effort.

The vaccination campaign is scheduled to continue until the 29 May, 2026. The primary objective of the campaign is to protect children between the ages of one and five. This is achieved through the administration of a booster dose of the triple viral (MMR) vaccine. Health officials state this measure is fundamental to closing existing immunity gaps and, importantly, preventing the reintroduction of the measles virus into Paraguay.

Campaign targets young children to prevent outbreaks

Health authorities have intensified their vaccination strategies in order to bring the doses directly to the target population. This national mobilisation has strengthened outreach actions within communities and local neighbourhoods. Furthermore, the establishment of fixed vaccination posts and the deployment of mobile brigades have been instrumental in achieving greater adherence to the programme. The strategy has elicited a notably positive response from parents, mothers, and guardians throughout the nation.

Officials from the Expanded Programme on Immunization (PAI) have highlighted the importance of each dose administered. They emphasise that every single vaccine represents a vital opportunity to protect a child from highly contagious diseases. Measles, in particular, is a focus of the campaign because it can lead to severe complications with long-term health consequences. Therefore, preventative immunisation remains the most effective tool against potential outbreaks.

Authorities acknowledge collective effort

The Ministry of Health has formally expressed its gratitude for the considerable effort demonstrated by all involved. This includes vaccinators, supervisors, and the broader healthcare workforce, whose dedication has been pivotal to the campaign’s success. In addition, the ministry acknowledged the essential contributions of local authorities and the general public. Their collective commitment and participation were key factors in achieving this significant public health result.

The vaccination campaign is scheduled to continue until 29 May, 2026. The ultimate goal is to reach and subsequently exceed the national target of vaccinating 95% of all eligible children. For this reason, authorities are issuing a continued call to action. They strongly urge families who have not yet had their children vaccinated to visit their nearest health service to complete the corresponding immunisation schedule as soon as possible.

Measles vaccination campain continues

The Ministry of Health encourages the public to find their nearest vaccination centre by consulting official information channels.

The ministry reassures the public that the vaccine is safe, effective, and saves lives, and warmly invites the entire population to continue to actively support and participate in this vital national initiative.
