This year, the 19th edition of La Rifa Sin Fronteras, or Draw Without Borders in English, is held for the benefit of the Fundación San Rafael — Centro de Ayuda a la Vida. The foundation, which Italian Priest Father Aldo Trento directs, helps to carry out programs in education and health care with the Policonsultorio Juan Pablo II and Casa Divina Providencia. It also helps with food insecurities with the Comedor Santa Magdalena de Canossa. Furthermore, it helps with shelters for children, adolescents, and older adults of low-income families with the help of the San Joaquín y Santa Ana Fundación. So far, more than 25K Paraguayans have benefited from the programs organised by the foundation.
Father Aldo Trento was born in Belluno, Italy, in 1947. He moved to Paraguay on April 6, 1989, on the advice of a colleague. The Foundation of the St. Rafael Parish was established ten years later, on April 19, 1999, by a group of priests to meet people’s basic needs in health, education, food, and training. Today, it welcomes terminal and chronic patients, sick, abandoned, orphaned and vulnerable children. It also provides free medical care and primary and high school education for them and adolescents with limited resources, a clear demonstration of how it is possible to assist human beings without discrimination. As the website says, “The mission of the foundation is to transmit the glory of the Christ through works of general interest and common good, providing care to needy people, preferably HIV and cancer patients, abandoned or abused children. The vision is to be an exemplary institution that communicates the beauty of Christ and restores the dignity of people in vulnerable situations through comprehensive assistance.” The foundation, which celebrated 35 years of existence earlier this year, is organising these raffles to draw attention to the necessities of the beneficiaries.
