German Week 2026 Brings Culture, Food And Oktoberfest To Asunción

German Week 2026 is underway in Paraguay, bringing almost two weeks of cultural, educational and social activities to Asunción and San Lorenzo. Running until 14 October, the programme includes literature, art, academic opportunities, German food and the traditional Oktoberfest. Most activities are free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.

Known as Semana Alemana – Deutsche Woche, the event is organised by the German Embassy in Paraguay and the Paraguayan-German Cultural Institute Goethe-Zentrum (ICPA-GZ). Several German organisations and institutions operating in Paraguay are also participating in the 2026 programme. The celebrations started on Saturday, 3 October, coinciding with German Unity Day, which commemorates the country’s reunification in 1990.

Study, literature and employment opportunities

On Tuesday, 6 October, activities will be held at the ICPA-GZ, located at Juan de Salazar 310 near Artigas in Asunción. At 11:00, Rafael Escobar of Paraguay’s Ministry of Justice and Cynthia Florentín of the Coordinadora por los Derechos de la Infancia y la Adolescencia (CDIA) will participate in a discussion. Both previously took part in the German Federal Government’s Visitors Programme, providing the connection between their work in Paraguay and Germany. During the discussion, they will share experiences from Germany and examine cooperation between government and civil society.

Later, at 18:30, Dr Michael Dobstadt, local representative of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), will present information about opportunities to study in Germany. The talk will also cover scholarships available for those interested in pursuing their education in the country. The day’s programme concludes at 20:30 with the ICPA-Treff, a meeting combining German art and gastronomy.

Contemporary German literature

German literature takes centre stage on Wednesday, 7 October. The ICPA-GZ will host #ZwischenDenZeilen #EntreLíneas at 18:00, introducing visitors to contemporary German literature. The event is organised by the German degree programme at the Instituto Superior de Lenguas and the DAAD lectureship.

Opportunities for students and professionals continue on Friday, 9 October. From 13:00 to 17:00, the UPA in San Lorenzo will hold an employment fair connecting participants with professional opportunities. At 18:00, activities return to the ICPA-GZ for the presentation of Alemán básico para un futuro mejor (Basic German for a Better Future). The university outreach project involved German-language students teaching a course at the Chacarita Community Centre.

Oktoberfest and German art in Asunción

One of the main social events arrives on Saturday, 10 October, with the traditional Oktoberfest organised by Club Alemán DTA. The celebration begins at 19:00 at Club Alemán, located at General Santos 984 near Tte. Ruiz in Asunción. Unlike most German Week activities, admission to Oktoberfest requires a ticket, with passes available through Ticketea. Earlier that afternoon, German comic artist, author and illustrator Mia Oberländer will participate in an illustrators’ panel at Comic Con Paraguay. The activity begins at 16:30 at the Centro de Convenciones Mariscal.

Oberländer will remain one of the central international guests during the final days of German Week. On Monday, 12 October, she will present her graphic novel Ana at 19:00 at the ICPA. The book follows three generations of women and explores ideas surrounding physical difference and what it means to stand out. Oberländer will then participate in an After Office Creativo on Tuesday, 13 October, inviting participants to draw alongside her. The creative gathering starts at 19:00 at Club Touch in Paseo Carmelitas, located at España 1272 in Asunción.

German Week concludes on 14 October

The final day of German Week begins at 15:00 at the Universidad Paraguayo-Alemana in San Lorenzo. Students will share their experiences of spending an academic year in Germany, offering insight to others considering a similar opportunity. At 18:00, the ICPA-GZ will host #Blicke #Vistas, an audiovisual look at contemporary Germany through cinema, television, series and social media. The activity is organised by the German degree programme at the Instituto Superior de Lenguas and the DAAD lectureship.

German Week 2026 officially concludes at 19:00 with Noche Alemana at Colegio Goethe in Asunción. Students from the school will present a varied programme to close nearly two weeks of activities celebrating German culture and connections with Paraguay.
