The city of Asunción will host its 15th edition of World Car-Free Day on the 20 September, 2026. The event aims to encourage the public to leave their vehicles at home for one day. Instead, residents are invited to explore healthier and more environmentally friendly methods of transport.
The initiative seeks to raise awareness about regulating car usage and to promote the bicycle as a sustainable and healthy alternative. Furthermore, it intends to encourage physical activity and contribute to the care of the local environment.
Event details and route
The cycle will commence at 09:00 AM starting from the Asunción Botanical Garden and Zoo. The designated route covers a distance of 17 kilometres through several of the city’s main thoroughfares.
Participants will travel along Avenida Primer Presidente, Avenida Costanera, and Avenida General Santos. The route continues along Avenida Brasilia, Vía Férrea, Avenida Mariscal López, and Avenida Sacramento. The ride will conclude by returning along Avenida Primer Presidente to the Botanical Garden. A hydration point will be available for all cyclists at Plazoleta Vía Férrea.
Participation and organisation
Participation in the event is open to everyone and is free of charge. Attendees will have the option to purchase an official event jersey, which includes a ticket for entry into prize draws. For those who need a bicycle, rentals can be arranged directly with the event organisers.
The event on World Car-Free Day is being organised by Cyclesport SA. It has received support from the Directorate of Youth and Sports of the Municipality of Asunción and the Asunción Botanical Garden and Zoo. Additionally, the day is sponsored by Specialized, Powerade, and Compressport.
Earlier this year, Cyclesport SA organised the annual “Respect the Cyclist” (Respeta al Ciclista) cycling event, held with great success at the Asunción Botanical Garden and Zoo. A large number of participants gathered for the traditional ride, which was organised to promote safer road conditions for cyclists.
