Paraguay will host La Semana del Super8 (Super 8 Week) from 15 to 24 September 2026. The initiative consists of a free online lecture series bringing together leading filmmakers and researchers from Argentina, Brazil and Spain. Organised as the first stage of the Yvyra – Laboratory of Film Creation: For the Trees programme, the plan is to introduce participants to the artistic and technical foundations of Super 8 analogue cinema before the project’s in-person creative residency later this year.
The online programme is open to anyone interested in analogue filmmaking. While organisers will prioritise applicants from Paraguay, registration is also available to participants throughout Ibero-America. Attendance is free, although places are limited and advance registration through a form is required.
Rediscovering the art of analogue filmmaking
In an era dominated by digital video, Yvyra invites participants to slow down and reconnect with filmmaking as a physical craft. The programme explores Super 8 as a recording format, a creative language with its own history, aesthetics and visual grammar. Throughout the four sessions, international speakers will examine how analogue processes continue to inspire contemporary artists and experimental filmmakers.
The broader Yvyra project combines education with artistic production. According to the programme, its long-term objective is to create five original Super 8 short films while encouraging participants to reflect on the symbolic relationship between trees, memory and creative growth. Training will take place both online and in person in Altos and Asunción.
Four international perspectives on Super 8
The lecture series begins on 15 September 2026 at 18:00 with Argentine-Spanish researcher and filmmaker Pablo Marín. His presentation, Is Super 8 the Last Philosophical Toy?, explores the history of the format and its continuing relevance within experimental cinema.
Argentine filmmaker Paulo Pécora follows on 17 September 2026 at 19:00 with a talk entitled Analogue Thinking. His session examines how working with photochemical processes can reshape the way filmmakers observe and interpret the world.
On 22 September 2026 at 19:00, Brazilian collective Duo Strangloscope will present Botanical Cinema. They will introduce audiences to experimental techniques that incorporate plants, natural materials and handmade processes into analogue filmmaking. The final lecture takes place on 24 September 2026 at 18:00, when Argentine-Spanish artist Daniela Cugliandolo discusses how ideas evolve into finished Super 8 productions through filming and editing.
A wider creative programme
La Semana del Super8 represents the opening stage of Yvyra’s wider training programme. Participants wishing to continue can apply separately for Residencia Yvyra, an in-person analogue filmmaking residency. Selected artists will develop original Super 8 short films under the guidance of experienced mentors. The residency will take place in Altos and Asunción and forms part of a broader effort to strengthen analogue film practice in Paraguay.
Although digital filmmaking has become the global standard, initiatives such as Yvyra demonstrate that analogue cinema continues to attract artists interested in experimentation, craftsmanship and tactile storytelling. By connecting Paraguayan audiences with internationally recognised practitioners, La Semana del Super8 offers an accessible introduction to a filmmaking tradition.
