Paraguay began 2026 with strong momentum in domestic tourism, according to new figures released by the National Secretariat of Tourism (SENATUR). January recorded an average hotel occupancy rate of 80% across the country. The rise was driven mainly by Paraguayan travellers choosing to explore destinations within national borders.
This positive start highlights a growing interest in local travel experiences. Families, couples, and groups sought nature, culture, and relaxation during the holiday season. Authorities believe the trend reflects increased confidence in local tourism infrastructure and services.
National travellers lead the movement
Data from SENATUR’s Tourism Observatory shows that 80% of hotel guests were Paraguayan nationals. Regional visitors also played an important role in supporting the sector. Argentinians represented 52% of foreign guests, followed by Brazilians at 42% and Germans at 14%.
The most visited departments were Cordillera, Alto Paraná, Itapúa, Guairá, and Asunción. Each destination offered a mix of cultural landmarks, natural attractions, and seasonal activities. These areas continue to strengthen their reputation as accessible holiday spots for both local and international visitors.
Attractions reflect strong demand in domestic tourism
Among the most popular sites, the Itaipú Tourist Complex led with 98,084 visitors in January. The Guaraní Jesuit Missions attracted 12,064 tourists, while the Yacyretá Dam received 4,269 visitors. Natural sites welcomed 13,703 people, and cultural attractions recorded 2,409 visits.
Travel activity also increased across transport networks. The Ministry of Public Works and Communications registered 1,306,034 light vehicles passing through toll points nationwide. Meanwhile, the Asunción Bus Terminal reported the movement of 665,540 passengers during the month.
International arrivals show steady growth
Inbound tourism also showed positive results at the start of the year. The National Directorate of Migration recorded 205,067 international tourists entering Paraguay in January. This represents a 28.8% increase compared to the same month in 2025.
SENATUR noted that tourism growth supports employment and strengthens local economies. The sector continues to position itself as a key pillar of sustainable development. Paraguay’s cultural richness and natural diversity remain central to its appeal.
