Asunción Gearing Up For Lanús vs Atlético Mineiro in Sudamericana Final Showdown

The CONMEBOL Sudamericana final between Argentine Lanús and Atlético Mineiro from Brazil will turn all eyes towards the Asunción, making it the centre of attention for the entire continent. The economic impact is estimated to be in the millions, and will have unprecedented international reach. The kick-off at Estadio Defensores del Chaco in Paraguay’s capital is scheduled for 17:00 local time on Saturday, 22 November 2025.

Paraguayan footballers Ronaldo De Jesús, who played for Cerro Porteño last year, and José Canale Domínguez will line up for Lanús, while their compatriot Junior Alonso (also a former Cerro player) will represent Atlético Mineiro.

This marks the third occasion that Asunción has hosted the Sudamericana final, though it will be the inaugural time the legendary Estadio Defensores del Chaco serves as the decisive battleground. The stadium stands as a cornerstone of continental football heritage, having previously welcomed finals of the Copa Libertadores and Copa Copa América.

Economic impact and hotel occupancy

According to official estimates, the final will generate an economic boost of US$28.2 million, driving sectors such as hotels, restaurants, transport, tourism and commerce in Asunción and its metropolitan area. For the days around 22 November hotel reservations are already at almost 100% in Asunción and Greater Asunción, according to industry representatives.

Josefina Otero, the president of the Paraguayan Hotel Industry Association (AIHP), confirmed that “almost all the beds in the capital and its surroundings are already reserved for the key days of the event,” and highlighted that this final represents “a unique opportunity to project Asunción as a top-level tourist destination in the region.”

The scale of the event will require the participation of more than 4,000 people in organisation, logistics, security and services, representing a significant temporary employment opportunity.

Stadium innovations and international exposure

The Defensores del Chaco stadium, specially renovated for the occasion, will present a new look. Among its innovations are the addition of the Spidercam, an aerial camera used in major tournaments worldwide, and the semi-automatic SOAT offside system, guaranteeing a top-level technical and visual spectacle.

In addition to sport, culture will also have its place. Just like in the previous edition, the Costanera in Asunción will host the South American Festival on 20 and 21 November, with more than 15,000 people expected. There will be local artists, brand activations, and interactive experiences in a free, family-friendly atmosphere, transforming the city into a true capital of football and joy.

The international exposure will be immense. The match will be broadcast in 194 countries, giving Paraguay unprecedented visibility. In addition, the CONMEBOL Museum in Luque, near Asunción, will present an exclusive exhibition on the history of the Copa Sudamericana, further strengthening the tournament’s cultural and tourism legacy.
