Paraguay has launched a new digital platform providing public access to nearly 100,000 pages of historical documents and newspapers. The digital archive, titled “Memoria escrita de un Gigante 1845-1904” (Written Memory of a Giant 1845-1904), was presented by the Ministry of Education and Sciences (MEC).
This online archive brings together a vast collection of materials from a pivotal period in the nation’s history. It includes approximately 50 historical newspapers, magazines, and other publications, many of which were previously difficult to access due to being held in dispersed collections. The project aims to make these valuable primary sources readily available to students, teachers, researchers, and the general public.
A window into Paraguayan heritage
Among the significant publications now digitised are Cabichuí, El Centinela, and Cacique Lambaré. These newspapers are considered fundamental sources for understanding the political, social, and cultural life of 19th-century Paraguay. Cabichuí and El Centinela were notable illustrated trench newspapers printed during the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870), offering unique insights from the period. Cacique Lambaré, written in the Guaraní language, was also instrumental in fostering national identity during the conflict.
The digitisation effort not only preserves this documentary heritage but also provides a direct link to the events and debates that shaped the nation. By making these sources accessible online, the government hopes to foster a deeper understanding of Paraguay’s past.
Harnessing technology for historical research
A key feature of the new digital archive platform is its use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). These advanced tools enable users to perform detailed searches and queries on the content of the digitised documents. The AI can process materials in different languages and formats, significantly enhancing the archive’s usability for researchers.
James Cason, a former US Ambassador to Paraguay and one of the researchers involved in the project, highlighted the educational potential of the platform. He noted that it would empower educators across the country to engage their students with primary historical sources.
“A teacher from any corner of the country will be able to ask their students to carry out research with this platform. They can also download it and make copies for other students.”
“A vital resource for education”
The Minister of Education and Science, Luis Ramírez, emphasised the digital archive project’s significance for the nation. He described the launch as a day of great importance for Paraguayan education and for all citizens.
“We have the compilation of a large part of the history of all the documents that occurred between the 1800s and our days. So today is a day of great importance for Paraguayan education, for all Paraguayans. We also managed to access Paraguayan documents held in the Vatican. It is fascinating and fantastic.”
The initiative is seen as a major contribution to both the preservation of Paraguay’s documentary heritage and the advancement of historical education. Cason concluded by explaining the supportive role of the new technology.
“Today a new generation of technology allows these pages to be consultable, connected, and useful for everyone. What we are presenting today is not the conclusion of an archive; it is the proof that the archive Paraguay deserves can now be built. If we preserve our memory, we will build our future. The purpose of this technology is not to replace the historian, but to offer them the ability to find and compare evidence with a speed that no individual reader could achieve.”
