In the heart of Mbocayaty, in Paraguay’s Guairá Department, a majestic Guapo’y (Ficus enormis) stands tall, its towering presence earning this majestic tree a nomination in the 2025 Colossi of the Earth (Colosos de la Tierra) competition. This environmental competition is a Paraguayan initiative that honours the largest and most culturally significant native trees across Latin America.
Inspired by his close relationship with the local community in Mbocayaty, German-speaking local resident Luca Popper nominated the imposing colossus Guapo’y that is the inspiration for two of his neigbours running a hostel near where the tree stands. Competing in the category of Largest Tree in Protected Wilderness Areas, Guapo’y stands out for its remarkable grandeur, commanding presence, and enduring majesty.
A deep affection
Guapo’y is a majestic tree located near the hostel Casa Blanca en Árbol Gigante (White House in Giant Tree). Christine and Edgar Becker, the hostel owners, named their hostel after the tree, reflecting their deep affection for it.
“Christine and Edgar truly love the tree,” Luca states. “I thought nominating it was the perfect way to highlight their connection to both the tree and the community.”
A competition celebrating nature’s giants
Colossi of the Earth is a Paraguayan competition, organised by NGO A Todo Pulmón Paraguay Respira, celebrating the country’s largest and most remarkable trees. The contest invites people to nominate trees possessing cultural, historical, or ecological significance.
Each nomination features interesting stories, traditions, and communities surrounding these natural giants. In 2025, the contest culminates on 9 October when the winners will be announced.

A tree with history and mystery
Guapo’y is no ordinary tree. It towers on a rock, compelling visitors to look up, not just because of its height but also due to its commanding position. Local lore adds an element of mystery: traces of Viking runes have been reportedly found in nearby mountains. Some even imagine the tree as the mast of a Viking ship, reminiscent of King Arthur’s legendary sword, standing proudly in stone. Such stories enrich the cultural and historical aura surrounding this remarkable natural landmark.
The tree has become a gathering point for locals and visitors alike. Christl and Edgar’s hostel hosts workshops, casual meet-ups, and social events, all under the protective canopy of Guapo’y.
“The tree spans like a protective shield, and everyone feels that,” Luca remarks. The tree gives them a common bond and a shared affection for nature, so more than a landmark, it is a symbol of the community.
The nomination of Guapo’y

Organising the nomination was a joyful experience for Luca and his neighbours.
“We have been friends since the day we met. We help each other constantly, and coordinating this nomination was a brilliant extension of that relationship.”
One particularly memorable moment occurred when the family’s poodle posed in a sunbeam, a scene that reminded Luca of John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley, where a giant sequoia becomes a striking symbol of nature’s grandeur.
For Luca and the foreign community, Guapo’y is deeply significant. “It is simply El Gigante (the Giant).”
Many newcomers are drawn to Paraguay by their love of nature, and this tree embodies that connection. Beyond its physical stature, it represents friendship, community spirit, and shared memories. Winning the competition would be a delight, but the real reward lies in seeing the tree celebrated and appreciated by everyone who visits.
A celebration in the community
The Colossi of the Earth competition is not just about identifying the tallest or oldest trees; it is a celebration of the significant role these natural landmarks play in our existence. Through stories, traditions, and community engagement, trees like Guapo’y become symbols of identity and connection.
Luca’s initiative has not only highlighted the tree but also strengthened bonds among neighbours, newcomers, and locals alike. As the competition draws near, the excitement surrounding Guapo’y is a testament to the power of nature to inspire and unite.
