The Japanese Association of Asunción is proud to present the eighth edition of Nihon Matsuri, an annual festival that brings together the richness of Japanese tradition, art, music, dance, and above all, cuisine. The celebration offers a cultural experience for all ages and will take place on Saturday 4 October 2025, at the Association’s Social and Sports Complex in Villa Elisa.
A feast of flavours
One of the festival’s greatest attractions is its 38 food stands, each serving well-loved Japanese dishes adapted to Paraguayan tastes. Visitors will be able to enjoy warming bowls of ramen and stir-fried yakisoba, alongside skewers of juicy yakitori, savoury okonomiyaki pancakes, and delicate pieces of sushi.
Street-food favourites such as takoyaki (octopus balls), gyoza, and karaage (crispy fried chicken) will also be available, together with lighter options including harumaki (spring rolls), onigiri, and obento boxes. To finish, traditional Japanese sweets and wagashi treats will be on offer.
Prices start from as little as Gs. 5.000, making the experience accessible to all.

Tradition through performance
One of the highlights is Taiko drumming, which combines powerful rhythms with synchronised movements to create an unforgettable spectacle, embodying both discipline and energy.
Another traditional performance is Bon Odori, a folk dance performed in circles around a raised platform called a yagura. With simple, repetitive steps, it invites everyone to join in, creating joyful moments where families and friends dance side by side
Adding a modern twist, Yosakoi is a dynamic style of dance that blends traditional Japanese movements with colourful costumes and the use of naruko (wooden clappers). Fast-paced, theatrical, and visually striking, it brings excitement and vibrancy to the festival stage.
Adding to the excitement this year is a special performance by magician Keiichi Iwasaki, a 2022 finalist on Britain’s Got Talent, bringing wonder and light-hearted fun to the programme.

Nihon Matsuri 2025: Roots and community
The first Nihon Matsuri was held in 2016 to mark the 80th anniversary of the arrival of Japanese immigrants in Paraguay. Since then, it has become one of the country’s most anticipated cultural events, highlighting the contribution of the Japanese-Paraguayan community and strengthening the ties between both cultures.
In Japan, festivals (matsuri) traditionally serve to give thanks, celebrate community, and honour nature and spiritual beliefs. These same values are reflected in Nihon Matsuri, which has grown into a symbol of cultural integration and shared identity in Paraguay.
