Paraguay Launches National Flag Campaign For 215th Independence Anniversary

A new national campaign named Embanderate has been launched in Paraguay, encouraging citizens to display the national flag in celebration of the 215th anniversary of National Independence. The Centro Cultural de la República El Cabildo, (CCR) is supporting the national flag campaign initiative, which invites the public to adorn their properties with the flag as a symbol of identity and belonging.

This patriotic drive is timed to precede the national celebrations on the 14th and 15th of May, the dates on which Paraguay officially commemorates its independence. The Paraguayan flag is the only flag in the world with different designs on the front and back. There are other countries, such as the Republic of Moldova, where the coat of arms on the front and back of the flag are mirrored, but Paraguay is the only country where the design itself is different on both sides.

National flag campaign for all people in Paraguay

The campaign’s central aim is to see homes, businesses, and public spaces throughout the country decorated with the national pavilion. This widespread visual display is intended to foster a unified atmosphere of commemoration and national pride.

The initiative represents a call to all people in Paraguay to actively participate in the anniversary, making a collective statement about their shared heritage and the significance of the nation’s sovereignty, which was secured over two centuries ago.

A call for widespread civic participation

Organisers are calling for comprehensive participation from all sectors of society. The invitation extends from individual households, encouraged to fly a flag from a window or balcony, to commercial establishments and public institutions, which are asked to prominently display the national colours. This collective effort is designed to create a powerful and visible expression of patriotism across the entire country, transforming the national landscape into a tapestry of red, white, and blue.

The campaign, whose name Embanderate translates as a call to raise the flag, therefore serves as a simple yet direct way for everyone to engage with the celebrations. By encouraging a simple and accessible action, the campaign provides a platform for citizens to connect with their country’s history in a tangible way. The act of displaying the flag serves as a reminder of the shared values and historical struggles that bind the nation together, reinforcing the importance of the independence commemorations.

A unified effort by national and local bodies

The Embanderate campaign is a coordinated project, propelled by a broad coalition of governmental and civic organisations. This joint effort is spearheaded by the Government of Paraguay, the Office of the First Lady, and the Municipality of Asunción. These key governmental bodies have joined forces with community-focused groups, including the civic organisation ASU 500 and the Association of the Historic Centre of Asunción Movement, to ensure the campaign’s success and broad reach across the capital and beyond.

The involvement of the Centro Cultural de la República El Cabildo is also central to the initiative, lending it significant cultural weight. This collaboration between diverse entities highlights a shared commitment to promoting national values. The articulated purpose of this joint work is to fortify citizen participation and to enhance the appreciation for patriotic symbols among the populace.

Building a legacy

Beyond the immediate celebrations, the organisers have a long-term vision for the campaign. A key objective is to establish Embanderate as a permanent and cherished annual tradition. The hope is that the act of displaying the Paraguayan flag in mid-May will become an enduring practice, intrinsically linked with the Independence Day festivities for years to come. This forward-looking approach seeks to embed the practice within the national culture.
