Paraguay Elected To UN General Assembly Vice-Presidency For 2026-2027

The Republic of Paraguay has been elected to serve as one of the Vice-Presidents for the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly. This significant appointment positions the nation within the key political leadership of the global body for the 2026-2027 period. The role underscores a strengthening of Paraguay’s presence in international forums and its commitment to multilateral diplomacy. The session is scheduled to take place from September 2026 to September 2027.

This appointment means Paraguay will play a direct part in the deliberative processes and provide assistance to the presidency of the UN’s main policymaking organ. Representing the country in this capacity will be Ambassador Marcelo Scappini, the Permanent Representative of Paraguay to the United Nations..

A key role in global governance

The General Assembly stands as the primary deliberative and representative body of the United Nations, where all 193 member states have an equal voice. Consequently, holding a vice-presidency is a position of considerable influence and responsibility. The vice-presidents are instrumental in guiding the Assembly’s work and ensuring that its proceedings are conducted efficiently and in accordance with its rules of procedure. Their duties often involve presiding over meetings in the absence of the President and facilitating consensus among member states.

As part of this role, Paraguay will become a member of the General Committee. This committee acts as the steering body for the General Assembly. Its critical functions include reviewing the session’s agenda, allocating agenda items to the various committees, and coordinating the overall work programme. Therefore, Paraguay’s participation will directly influence the focus and flow of discussions on the international stage.

A history of diplomatic recognition

This is not the first time Paraguay has been entrusted with such a responsibility. The nation previously held a vice-presidency during the 2020-2021 period, a role then exercised by Ambassador César Arriola. This re-election highlights a continuity in the international community’s recognition of Paraguay’s active and constructive engagement within the multilateral system.

The repeated selection for this position reflects positively on Paraguay’s foreign policy. It also highlights the country’s efforts to contribute meaningfully to global peace, security, and development. Furthermore, the role provides Paraguay with a valuable platform to advocate for its national interests and the priorities of the Latin American and Caribbean region on a global scale.

Strengthening Paraguay’s international standing

For the 81st session, the United Nations has designated Khalilur Rahman as the President of the General Assembly. Paraguay, in its vice-presidential capacity, will work closely with Rahman and the other members of the General Committee to manage the extensive agenda.

The election to the vice-presidency is a significant diplomatic achievement for Paraguay. It not only enhances the country’s visibility but also provides a distinct opportunity to contribute to shaping the global agenda. By participating in the highest levels of the General Assembly’s leadership, Paraguay can help steer discussions on key global issues. These topics range from sustainable development and climate change to human rights and international law. This elevated role is a testament to the nation’s growing influence and its proactive approach to foreign relations.
