Faculty Of Medical Sciences To Host Community Health Day For Older Adults In Asunción

A community-centred health initiative will take place in Asunción, in the Sajonia neighbourhood. The Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National University of Asunción (FCMUNA) is preparing to host a comprehensive care day for older adults. The event forms part of an ongoing outreach effort designed to bridge gaps between academic medicine and public health needs.

Scheduled for Thursday, 23 April at 09:00, the session will take place in Sajonia. The initiative will be held at the Family Medicine Department classroom, located within the former Hospital de Clínicas site. The initiative is organised under the Community Project for the Care of Older People. This programme continues to expand its local impact through practical engagement.

A community-focused approach to ageing

The event will offer a wide range of services promoting the overall well-being of older adults. Planned activities include participant registration, monitoring of vital signs, and educational talks on first aid, both at home and in public spaces. In addition, attendees will be able to take part in guided practical sessions and social interaction spaces designed to foster connection and active ageing.

This type of initiative reflects a broader shift in healthcare delivery, where prevention and community engagement play an increasingly central role. In Paraguay, access to healthcare services can vary significantly depending on location and resources. As a result, programmes like this aim to reduce inequalities. At the same time, encouraging early detection and healthier lifestyles.

Moreover, the inclusion of social activities highlights the importance of emotional and psychological well-being in later life. Previous initiatives linked to the Older Adults Club have demonstrated how community spaces can strengthen intergenerational ties and reduce isolation, particularly through activities such as art therapy and group workshops.

Training future doctors with older adults in Asunción

Beyond its immediate benefits for participants, the event also serves as a training platform for medical residents and Family Medicine students. This hands-on approach allows students to integrate theoretical knowledge with a more human-centred perspective. In particular, it reinforces the importance of empathy, communication, and cultural awareness when treating ageing populations. FCMUNA has increasingly prioritised this model of education, combining academic excellence with community service. Through initiatives like this, the institution strengthens its role not only as a centre of learning but also as an active contributor to public health.

Strengthening community ties

The organisers have emphasised that the event is open to all interested older adults, with free access to activities. Family members and caregivers are also encouraged to attend, reinforcing the idea of shared responsibility in promoting healthy ageing.

Among the project’s long-term goals are strengthening community ties, improving equitable access to healthcare, and encouraging healthy habits through education, exercise, and nutrition.
